Farewell, GLK!

A little over a month ago, my 2013 GLK 250 was introduced to a deer on the highway at about 75mph. This is what resulted.
First, I’ll say these vehicles are built like tanks! The car kept running (the radiator is cracked), stayed in full control, went into “emergency mode,” didn’t deploy the air bags, and got me to the side of the road with no injuries.
I’m grateful for its 10 years and 261,000 miles of service. It was my first MB and we debated if it was worth it, but the car earned every penny we spent on it. The diesel engine rocked and ran like a Swiss watch the entire time. It squeezed out 40mpg on the highway and averaged 36mpg. I loved this car!
Unfortunately we looking for a replacement (insurance totaled it), I was less than impressed with the GLAs, GLBs, and GLCs. No diesels and the styling was…meh. As a result, I went to a different German car, one that’s actually made in Germany.
On a side note, anyone need an unused set of OEM roof rack cross bars? I bought them a couple of years ago and never even installed them.

Ouch... glad you are ok. Sad that cars are so easy to total.
I hit a deer going 80 long time ago in my first car (Toyota Solara). The only things I had to replace were hood and radiator and I paid for out of pocket. Nowdays a headlight costs more than that.

all the crumple zones and expensive components make it a lot easier to just total. But given the age and mileage on the car, I expected that to be the case.

So pleased that you are ok. My wife just loves her GLK and hates the thought that she'll inevitably need to replace it at some point with a non-diesel.
I second your thoughts on the GLC. That's what I drive but I use any excuse to use the wife's GLK, it's a special car.

Wow! That's definitely totaled. There's a lot of deer around here and I'm very watchful every day.

I may be interested in the roof rack if it fits a 2010.

Sorry to hear of the mishap, but so glad the GLK protected its occupants! They are solid little tanks indeed.

We just had a deer cross our path the other day, my wife and I, as we were riding 2-up on the Yamaha. Not a fun moment, good thing the bike has ABS brakes!

I wish you much success in your new German-made German brand vehicle, it will be even better at protecting you as no doubt it's much newer.

Alas, you'll likely never see the same fuel efficiency ever again but there are always trade-offs in life. All the best!

Sorry to see such a beautiful vehicle reduced to scrap, but glad to see that the car did its job and got you safely off the road. I couldn't agree more about the styling of the newer "GLx" series vehicles - none are close to as pretty as the GLKs (both pre- and post-facelift).

About the only thing that would coerce me to trade in my GLK is finding a nice diesel variant, though my gasser is doing pretty well (around 25mpg highway, and not much less around town).

I am glad you and your family is ok and baby-G protected you guys all the way! I am not a fan of new MB GLx line-up styling either - soulless tin cans if you ask me . The only ones I liked were new GLBs but the interior styling was a definite turn off!
I'll be keeping my little diesel as long as I possibly can

Best of luck with your new car!

Very glad you’re fine, but sad about your GLK. RIP.
I have a 2015 250 BT and very interested in the roof racks.

Glad to hear you’re all okay. Lost our 2015 GLK350 to an animal 2 years ago. We were going to keep it forever. Replaced it with a GLB250. GLK did some things better, GLB is better at others. The interior was so non-Mercedes it took some getting used to. But looking inside all the new ones, all that welcoming glow of polished wood we loved is going away.

RIP. Glad to hear that you were safe, and agree that the car is like a tank!
