Question What (if any) other engines can i get my GLK350

I am looking at purchasing a 2010 GLK350 that is for sale in my area and when i went to look at it upon startup the engine started to tick, having only American made cars my whole life i am unfirmilliar with these engines and what this problem could be. I was told by a mercedes tech who is friend of my dads that it it possiby the cams and/or the timing chain and he said replacing them could be into the thousands of dollars. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to replace the parts on the current engine or just buy a used one with lower mileage or possibly brand new. That brings me to another question do they still make the m272 and if not what other options are there? thanks

The M272 has been (long since) discontinued, but there should be good examples still available in the junkyard / used car market. Avoid those from (IIRC) 2008 and before, as they had problems with the balance shaft gear (anything that came in a GLK is going to be fine - that was years after MB fixed the problem).

Also, "ticking" can mean a whole lot of things. Some of them insignificant, and some fatal flaws. FWIW, using the wrong spec oil (which nearly everyone does) can cause a pretty loud "ticking" at idle in a M272 engine. You have to get oil that's spec'd with the 229.5 (or 229.51) spec, such as Mobil 1 European Car Formula.

And FWIW, the GLK is a really great vehicle - quick, nimble, really reliable, and without a doubt (in my feeble mind, anyway) the prettiest SUV Mercedes ever made.

I'd advise you to keep looking. You should compare at least 3 of the same model back to back to back, that way you get a general idea what's "normal" and what might be weird.

Remember, the most expensive car is a cheap Mercedes.

Mine has also ticked since I bought it 4 1\2 years ago. It ticks at idle all the time. It has not changed at all over the years.

I know this might not be the case for most GLKs, and for all lubricants, but I did a bit of a test on my own 2011 (M272) and the results were dramatic. I was using plain ol' Mobil 1 (full synthetic, of course) and there would be some ticking, and it would get louder and louder until it was time for an oil change. I went with a 229.5 spec'd oil (Mobil 1 European Car Formula) and the engine got eerily quiet immediately. The next change was due, and I didn't have the ECF oil, so went back to "regular" Mobil 1, and got more ticking. By the time I did my last oil change, the ticking was very noticeable. Beyond what I'd consider "comfortable ticking"... really sounded for all the world like something was finally wearing out in my beloved M272. This time I changed the oil, and went with Liqui Moly 5W40 229.5 spec oil (five quarts) topped off with a couple quarts of Mobil 1 ECF. Even at a full "cold start" (a relative term in Arizona lately), there's no ticking ... at all. Dead quiet.

I'm a believer in the 229.5 spec oil. I'd be curious if anyone else out there has had a similar experience (or not).

The “motor oil Geek” on you tube tested the 0-40 Mobil 1 euro spec said viscosity after miles, tested borderline on the thin side , my oil test by Blackstone first came back borderline thin. The second test is better, I think a new FS formula is now out.
Motor oil Geek is thorough

The U.S. GLK350 had the M272 2008-2012 and the M276 2013-2015. Both engines have been discontinued. Those are the only gasoline engines available. The GLK has not been produced since 2015, so new is not possible. It was replaced by the GLC which is a completely different vehicle. Your dad’s MB mechanic friend should be able to provide details.

Here's the detail that might throw me off the scent of this particular beast... "The BRABUS GLK V8 starts at 198,200 Euros MSRP." I figure even with rapid depreciation, and assuming no "collector car status" has kicked in quite yet, this one's well out of my reach as a plaything...

AngryArtichoke's "GLK550" recently sold for a bit over $15K at auction - that was undoubtedly a smokin' deal for someone who'd be interested in the Brabus GLK (but who didn't want to spend a fortune).

Sarcasm.
Wouldn’t consider unless it came with 4BR, 2½ Baths, LR, DR, Den, Study, Furnished Kitchen. [more sarcasm]
