2017 GLS450 lunges forward while in park

My 2017 GLS450 lunges forward while it is in park. It doesn't go far, maybe a couple of inches. It happens intermittently and is rather abrupt, posing a safety concern. I worry that the car could lunge forward and hit a car or even a pedestrian. Anyone else experiencing this? The car has all the driver assist and park assist options if that is even has anything to do with the issue (the assist features are rarely used - not normally active I should say). This is one of those issues that rarely will present itself when at the dealership service center.

Is this happening while your vehicle is on a incline? Was any service done recently? What is the mileage? Sorry for so many questions.

The car lunges forward on a level plane. It does it regardless of the incline. No service done outside of normal maintenance and work done on the infamous A/C mildew odor problem. The vehicle has about 30K on it, but it has been doing this off and on since we bought it new.

Try a controlled experiment by noting all relevant information, each time the symptom occurs. Post your findings here and a pattern may be evident to you or others on the site.

I will try to compile some additional details this week, but in the meantime, this happens more often after driving a bit and then sitting with the car running, but in park. The typical scenario is pulling into a parking lot somewhere and waiting with the car running. Typically, after idling in park for at least five minutes (sometimes ten or so), the car will lunge forward.

Something you are doing in this process most likely. If you stop and put it in park, is the parking brake engaging? I've seen this where after a time the brake releases and just the trans park pawl holds the vehicle allowing it to move slightly, but I forget what the exact conditions are. Are you pushing the park button when you stop, or just opening a door and allowing it to automatically go to park? I think it's something like that which engages the brakes first, and then when the brakes release you still have the tension in the powertrain so it moves until it rests on the parking pawl inside the transmission. Try selecting park first and not engaging the parking brake and see if the issue persists.

Same happens to my 18 63. About 30-seconds to 45 after I put it into park it does it. I’m going to see if the parking brake makes a difference

Yes, I agree it is the parking brake engaging automatically.

Were you able to find out what the problem was? Most likely it's just the parking brake engaging. When I first got the vehicle I would freak out because it almost felt like someone hit my bumper.

I can't see how a parking brake could make the car lunge forward given that the car is in park on a flat surface.

I have the car at the dealership. So far they cannot duplicate the issue. Incidentally, the loaner, also a GLS450, does the same thing. The parking brake engages after about seven minutes (don’t know if it’s the same in every case). The other night my wife was parked in a driveway that has a significant slope to it. The loaner car lunged forward, uphill mind you. If this is normal, Mercedes needs to do something about it before someone gets tangled up in a lawsuit over someone getting “bumped” by the lunging Mercedes.

Yes, I agree. How about uphill on a sloped driveway? See my previous post about the loaner that does the same thing.

Since this happens to you consistently...have you tried making a video to show the dealer?

My objection to this lunging is that the car moves a couple of inches. Imagine if you are a pedestrian in a parking lot and you are cutting through cars in a parking lot. You walk in front of one these possessed Mercedes and get hit when the car lunges. Smells like a lawsuit to me.

I picked up up my wife’s car today from the service center. They couldn’t reproduce the lunge and so I went to test it with the service writer in the car with me. We went over to the new car lot and pulled into a parking space. I asked him if he thought that management would mind if I pulled up within an inch of a new car on display in front. It was to no avail, though. No lunge this time even after twenty minutes idling in park.

Ive noticed something similar to mine also. It does it as soon as I put the car in park and release the brake but it feels more like the car is settling its weight more than a lunge.
I have a 2019 GLS
