Need some advise about tires
Just had a flat on one of my tires, and need to get it replaced. I just had a brand new set of 4 put on about 12,000 miles ago. Can i just replace that one tire or do I need to get two tires. Should I just get one tire and get it shaved down to match the other 3? Thanks for any help. I have a 2017 GLS 550.

not correct. I had a blowout about 8 months after buying 4 Michelins from Costco. Unfortunately the tires had been discontinued so they ordered 2 of the newer version so that each axel would have matching tires and treadwear. Put 2 new on back and left 2 old on front.
There is no requirement to replace RFTs with new RFTs - many people replace all 4 RFTs with regular tires and carry a patch kit. Though I think it unlikely you would find a shop that would replace a single run flat with a non-RF - you need RFTs on all 4 or none.

same for lease returns per MB dealer. Each axel must be same brand/model (but ok for front/back to be different) - tread req is min 4/32 but all 4 can have different wear. And yes if car came with RFTs must be Lease returned with RFT.

oh really? thats good to know. do you have it in writing/publication by any chance? my dealer always tells me it has to be all the same for all 4 tires...

My GLS 450 was three months old and had 3000 miles when a pothole on a freeway destroyed passenger side front tire. My dealership said it would be fine to replace only that tire. Now 21,000 miles on the car and the rear tires are almost completely bald. The one on the same side as the newer front tire is worn the most. All the tires have different degrees of wear. I have had many SUVs and have never had to replace worn tires at 21,000 miles. In fact our BMW X5 went almost 60,000 miles before it needed new tires.
Not sure the tire replacement on the GLS had anything to do with the rear tires wearing out. By the way the wheels are 19" and the car does not have run flats. Original tires were Continentals put on by the factory.
Do any of you think shaving down the new tire would have made a difference on tire wear with that low mileage? Do tires wear out super fast on the GLS routinely for some reason?

The tiny difference in rotational speed between a new tire and a used one will easily be absorbed by the differentials. Matching or closely matching tires is more about stability in emergencies or bad road conditions.
