GLS 450
Transmission fluid change DIY

Hello. Following the forum for quite some time. I have a 2017 GLS 450 and I’m trying to look for tutorials on changing the transmission fluid and filter. All I can find on YouTube or forums is for the old 7 speed automatic transmission but non for the 9Gtronic. Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Do you have WIS/EPC? It is approx $6 on ebay, maybe a few dollars more. It contains the procedure. In principle it will be similar to the 7G-Tronic. An important point about transmission fill, for most vehicles 15 years old or newer, is to fill via overflow at operating temperature. This is different than the old school engine oil change, which is a simple drain and refill.

Bump. I'm interested in this as well. Is it any different than a 7 speed? Can someone confirm?

The transmission filter/pan is disposable and easy to replace. The difficult part is dropping the 4MATIC cross brace which blocks access to the two rear bolts. It's akin to changing transmisson mounts. You need a jack or other device to support the weight before dropping the brace. Then you can drop the pan. There's a reason why this is not done frequently as DIY when compared to the prior 7-speed

Every 60k miles for transmission fluid change.

Search function will bring up the maintenance booklet, posted many times on this site.

MX booklet?

Sorry, searched for GLS 550 maintenance booklet with no results. I’d love to have something to reference on recommended Mx intervals besides my dealer. Can you post the link please?

Thanks,

It was in the glove box with the operators manual when the car was new. I have a pdf version for the GLK, but I don't remember where I got it.

Here is a link to a generic one: https://www.mbusa.com/en/owners/service-maintenance

I'd attach the one for my GLK, but the file is too big. PM me your email address and I'd be happy to forward it to you. I'm sorry but I don't remember how I acquired it. I don't have one for the GLS.

I think I got mine from the Canadian MB web site. I found the one for the 2018 GLS but it doesn't have the same information. Here it is:
