Coolant for 2017 GLS450

got a code to check coolant level. it looks to be a little low. what type of coolant can i use in a 2017 GLS450? Does AutoZone carry this type? AZ is much closer to me than the MB dealer.

It's critical that you use MB coolant only. MB radiators are made out of aluminum and can be seriously damaged by using non MB coolant. There are many online horror stories of owners using non MB coolant and damaging their cooling system because of it.

BTW,, welcome. I would also suggest that you scroll down the main forum page to find the forum section for your MB. The owners there will own the same MB you own and will be glad to help you.

Welcome! Please post a photo of the GLS.

Agree on using MB coolant. Distilled water (not "filtered" water) will work in a pinch. Don't buy it at AutoZone, Napa, etc.

AUDI Q7
Hi,
got a low coolant level indicator. Added a bit of "Wetter Water", awesome results! Better MPG and lower temperatures. This is an old hack from Audi forums. Put it in the other rig Q7, same great results. Great for some 9$ @ Autozone.

chers,
Bob

Actually, the requirement is G40 formula antifreeze.

BASF of Germany is world’s largest chemical company and their antifreeze brand is Glysantin. Their formula numbers for coolants are preceded by G.

in USA, Valvoline antifreeze (Zerex) is available in equivalent formulas and it’s likely they produce antifreeze for MBUSA labeling and distribution as well. NAPA likely has it and maybe also AZ. Use only this or dealer stuff. Do not listen to any claims of “universal” or “foreign car” coolant. Has to be G40.

You might want to read up on some of the online horror stories posted by owners who did not use MB coolant. MB radiators have plastic internal parts that get damaged when non-MB coolant is used.

Mercedes does not make their own coolant. They do have specification to which it is wise to adhere. Find the appropriate spec for your vehicle (in the operator's manual) then look here to find a list of manufacturers that supply suitable coolant. My GLK needs MB325.0 (concentrate) or MB326.0 (premixed) coolant. The MB web site lists 40 different coolants that meet the MB325.0 spec. Sheet 320.1 also will tell you the appropriate spec for your engine.

I hope I don't have to read more radiator failure horror stories because someone used the wrong coolant in an effort to save a few $$$.

I suppose if you're not smart enough to match the numbers in your operator's manual to the ones on the bottle, then you should surrender your fate to the dealer, and hope they are (smart enough). However, to suggest that the only way to get coolant that won't destroy your radiator is to buy it from the dealer is to suggest that none of us is smart enough...

Paying attention to the plastic inner construction of your MB radiator and using the coolant that doesn't damage that inner plastic construction is what I would call common sense. Saving a few bucks on coolant only to spend more money replacing the damaged radiator down the road doesn't make sense to me but, to each their own.
