Would you rather? 2017 GLS 550 or 2020 BMW X7

I'm looking for a used luxury 3-row SUV. My choice either 2017 GLS 550 with 79,000 miles, priced at $38k, or 2020 BMW X7 with 56k miles, priced at $48k. My priorities are size (this will be a family car) and reliability. If you were me, what would be a better option and why? I'll drive between 20k to 30k miles per year.

GLS550 no doubt. A true beast! More spacious for 7 adults, drives better, more refined ride.

If your priorities are size and reliability then you should be looking at Toyota Sequoias.

Hi Tech Bi-Turbo V8 German SUV’s with Air Suspension and reliability are oxymorons for long term.

However, if you want a 7 seater SUV that can haul the fam with luggage, ride like a cloud in comfort mode, yet have some fun in sport mode, the 550 is your ticket without all the extra cost and drama of going AMG.

If you want a decent experience, search for a CPO on Mercedes inventory. CPO 17-18 GLS550’s are in the mid 40’s. CPO vehicles are inspected/repaired by Mercedes to certification. And it comes with 1 year unlimited mile warranty backed by Mercedes (a must if you’re driving 20k-30k miles per year). Also CPO vehicles are eligible for the extension of CPO warranty an additional 2 years giving you a total of 3 years unlimited mile warranty coverage. Contact Jeff Jackson he has the best prices around for the CPO extension. Worth the additional $2000 investment. Jeff Jackson

You can “save money” by buying a high mileage GLS cheaper from a non Benz dealer, they’ll say it will pass inspection, then find out it easily needs $10,000 in repairs and you’ll be screwed. My 17 GLS550 with only 41,000 miles was a CPO and needed close to that much in repairs right after purchase from things that were missed on Mercedes inspection (oil leak, coolant leaking on turbos, torn axle boots, motor mounts). All covered by Mercedes CPO I paid $0. It has been solid ever since going on 2 years. You get what you pay for! Don’t take the gamble and never buy one not under factory warranty or non CPO.

Not comparable. This is an apples-oranges question.

Price, year and mileage are not comparable.

Why not find a same-price GLS to compare the X7 to?

MB GLS450
I went from a 2018 GLS450 to a 2021 X7. The GLS450 is slightly bigger and offers more of a luxury drive, but the tech inside is more outdated. If you prefer more of a driver's car, then the X7 is it. It is still a smooth ride (has air suspension), much newer tech and drives/handles much better than the GLS450. If I had to do it again, I'd choose the X7.

Not sure if I would buy any MB post 2019. The reliability ratings seemingly took a hit after 2019 with the main culprit being the 48V system.

Also do your due diligence and research on that "dealer" Perfect Auto. Check the Yelp reviews. Definitely not the place to buy a GLS550!

Do these warranties cover systems like Active Curve and Air Suspension? I had a CPO 2013 GL550 and I think the dealer had to drop then motor twice to repair/replace the active curve system. Very expensive for MB.

Can you quote me on a 2018 GLS550 with 41k miles?

Both warranty companies do cover repairs involving active suspension/body roll. For an example contract that explains coverage, or if you have any questions you can reach out to tgibson@highline-autos.com or (855) 924-1333.

To OP, whatever you do, don't get the new one, I heard the reliability is pretty bad on it.
Back to the two vehicles mentioned, was there a specific reason why you are comparing a 2017 to a 2020 vehicle from different makes?
Let us know and whatever you decide, always do a PPI especially if not buying from the brand dealerships. Check the carfax as well, for MB ask for vehicle master inquiry to know the services done at a MB dealership while the previous owner had it.
