GLS550 M278 borescope cylinder pictures

Hey guys. Picked up a 95k GLS550 and had a friend take his borescope to it while we were doing spark plugs. I have searched for m278 scoring pictures and everything I have found has shown some severe scoring so I wanted to get your opinions on the pictures from my cylinders.

Thankfully none that i have noticed yet in the ~2k miles i have had it. Also haven't been babying it either.

I would stay on top of oil changes and either not get an ECU tune or get rid of it if you have one. Also, I would not drive overly aggressively.

This sure looks to dispell the rumor that the M278 got Iron cylinder liners in late 2015/early 2016

Do these pictures look concerning to the expert eyes here? I am going to go in with the borescope again with better position while turning the engine a bit.

it surely didn’t help to find lots of sand in crevices of the engine bay. The air filters were disgusting on top.

Looks like you have an engine number later than the alleged iron liner change point. The borescope images you provided seem to conflict with the ideas that:

- iron liners are impervious to scoring, or
- that iron liners were used in M278

When looking at the borescope photos, I can convince myself I see honing marks which are normal for iron-lined engines. I may be imagining the honing marks. Non-iron lined cylinders have a mirror finish which I don't think I see in the photos you posted.

If this engine has iron liners, and because it has evidence of cylinder damage, it suggests the vehicle was not well maintained especially related to oil change interval and oil/filter quality.

Very odd since it was dealer serviced by Mercedes of West Chester PA with all oil changes done at their recommended intervals. I will keep changing at 5k instead of 10k.

There is a recent M278 video posted on this site showing an engine earlier than the alleged iron liner changeover point, with scoring and with crosshatched cylinders. Crosshatching is consistent with iron liners. Scoring is inconsistent with iron liners. Doubt is therefore cast by the video on the notion that iron liners were used in M278 and whether or not they are impervious to scoring.
