Congratulations! Mine finally arrived at the dealer on Friday night. So hopefully Monday I'll be able get mine. It's a pain waiting for it especially knowing it's here in the dealer's lot.

Finally got my GLS580 delivered earlier today. This car is amazing!

One small thing that they changed that I like is the new radar sensor. It has thin heating elements going through them. Don't know how radar functions through that but this keeps the ice and snow from building up on the sensor and disabling the system. I know couple times in the winter someone drove through a puddle and splashed water on me. Then within minutes the system would deactivate due to ice buildup.

Thank you! I am still loving it! It's so much better than the outgoing GLS on so many levels. I am not even sure how to compare it.

It handles much better than the GLS550. It is softer and almost feels like the car is floating on air. Which it technically is I guess. But when going through corners it doesn't lean. And it's not like the active curve system where it firms up a bit when cornering. It still maintains that softness without leaning.

Interior lights are all soft white LED and they're bright! I love the LED accents and the ambiance lighting. Front headlights are exceptionally wide and bright. No cornering lamps though (the beams steer but it's a very subtle effect compared to the previous gen; but there is no actual cornering lamp function).

Transmission is more rough but I think that's because it's still wearing in. EQ Boost works in interesting ways. It seems it's primarily trying to generate electricity while braking so that it can use it to power the electric power consumers. It really doesn't like adding any power to the drive train unless you really push it. My engine is still wearing in so I really didn't push it. Engine seems a little sluggish starting from stop compared to the M278 engine and the turbo seems to kick in much later. But again that might be due to the breaking in period. I shall see in 900 more miles.

I love the curve mode, but steering assist doesn't work in this mode. Curve mode also seems to give me a false sense of turning ability as I don't feel the centrifugal force as much. Something I need to be careful of in the future.

And the Engine sounds MUCH better than the previous generation.

I know what I said is very fragmented but I just wrote down what I thought in whatever order it came up in my head.

It's really nice. Not as soft as I thought it would be but it's a significant upgrade over the standard leather I had on my GLS550.

Congratulations! How long did it take for you get get delivery from order date?

I ordered mine in September or October. I can't remember anymore. I got allocated for second decade of December production. On Dec 11th, I was notified that the production was now indicating second decade of January. January 3rd I was notified VIN number was issued and production was scheduled for the 13th. VPC Ready on the 17th and arrived at the dealer on the 23rd night. I couldn't do accept delivery on the 24th so I had to wait until Monday.

Initial impressions
They’ve said that GLS is the S Class of SUVs and I think they’ve finally gotten there.
I’ve now owned all 3 generations of the GL/GLS and can say this is the only version that finally feels like an S Class.
It’s super luxurious and so much so that I did a workout with voice trainer while driving it this morning. Say what? It even has a wellness application? Crazy !
Tech is definitely here and comfort is S Class sedan like.
I’m sure it would be great off road as well but that’s not me and probably wouldn’t help my 23 rims either lol.
MB is taking things up many notches in this new GLS.
I’m obviously excited and pleasantly surprised on many levels.

Your car looks very nice, love the color choice, good luck. After a week with the car, i agree completely with you. This is an S Class, so much more so than the previous model. It truly is an extreme step up in luxury from my '17 550. I am extremely happy with this in all ways, although i also feel that off the initial throttle this does not feel as fast as the outgoing model but i suspect this will change when i go to drive it more aggressively after break in.

i am putting on my winter tires and wheels tomorrow, although it seems we are not having a winter. i will share pics of that once complete.

Fuel economy and cylinder deactivation
Hi,

You guys that now have received them!

Is there any indication when the motor is in 4 cylinder mode?

Does it show in the consumption?

test drove the 400d that is really nice, longing for my 580!

Cheers from Sweden

I don't see anything that indicates when running in 4 cylinder mode, only when the engine start/stop is activated. There is also an ECO display that you can have in the HUD or middle of the dash. It shows your driving style on three dimensions - keeping a steady speed, gentle acceleration, and coasting or gentle deceleration. If you keep all 3 segments in the green, it will show you the impact on how your range improves over a "sporty" driver. I tried it and didn't find it too useful but maybe on a long trip on open road it would be.

Did you drive in dynamic select ECO.

I have read on MB press release of the motor that it should indicate. But when I tried a S560 coupe just to try our engine I can’t remember seeing any indication of any sort.

Just have to believe the systems work...

what’s your average consumption?

Its not gonna be a eco friendly car but will for sure love it anyway! 😎

I think I have been in either Sport or Comfort mode, but I think Comfort defaults to Eco for the engine, since it activates Start/Stop. I can't comment on fuel mileage. I haven't even used a full tank of gas and I spent a lot of time idling the vehicle when I was going over all the features at the dealership and then doing practice with the automatic parking feature (very scary the first time but now I'm getting used to it). I won't tell you my average consumption because it will scare you!

When buying a $100k+ vehicle I personally dont care about consumption especially when opting for a V8 .I can tell for sure that x167 consumption is much better than x166 .

Couldn't agree more.

I noticed that my engine does sometimes run rough when it's at idle causing unwanted vibrations (it feels like im sitting in a Nissan Altima 4cyl). I wonder if this is being caused by the 4 cyl mode and if so I would rather have this feature deactivated entirely. Last thing on my mind is the rate of fuel consumption.

i too have noticed car vibrating at idle, will have to turn off eco start/stop and see if it helps
. Is your hood reveal consistent front to back ? Mine is 1/4” by the headlight and 1/8 by the door pillar, thats buggs me alot.It shouldnt be like that on such expensive vehicle.

i see what you are saying about the wheel arches. The space between fender and arches will be getting dirt trapped inside which will look like crap and will require pressure washing as you will not get to it with a towel .Good thing my car is always garaged and will be getting minimal pollen in the spring.

I think as part of the 48v system, Mercedes lowers the idle speed on the engine at stop, which is the roughness you might be feeling. I think it is down to around 500 rpm. Then they use the battery pack for a smooth takeoff, even though the engine revs haven't come up immediately. All part of the Eco system.

Here is a printscr from the press release.
It should show in the display when the engine is in i4.

Well for me that live in Europe we can’t buy the i6 only diesel whit horrible environmental fee. So we “have” to buy the V8. It’s still nice if I don’t need to fill her up all the time and the m176 is a really nice engine! Just because you pay $120k+ doesn’t mean it has to have heavy consumption...

Cheers from Sweden

That's really annoying. Mine doesn't have that issue thankfully. It's flush from the front to the back with no variation in spacing.

The engine is turning at 600rpm when this happens. Its pretty annoying actually. Happens outside eco mode as well.

I will have to keep an eye out for this. I don’t recall seeing anything on the instrument cluster showing 8 cyclinder mode either.
