Wind noise

Hi

I have a wind noise at the top of the drivers window which is really noticeable over 50mph. I was wondering whether the window needs adjustment to raise the higher limit. We took into dealer today but they said they couldn’t hear so didn’t do anything. My wife and I must be imagining it!

Any ideas?

Thanks

Years ago, when I worked at our local MB dealership in South Florida, the technicians would use a paper $1.00 bill and run it along the closed window and see how much tension the would feel. Whenever, they found a "fault" or looseness, they would mark it for repair or window adjustment. Dealer personnel rarely like to spend time in searching for noises or rattles. Good luck with your issue.

Not imagining it - I have the exact same noise from the exact same place that is evident whilst on the highway. I suspect that it is derived form the slightly misaligned exterior window trim.

Yes - to the OP - did the dealer give you a Service Order/Invoice ? Did they give you the opportunity for a Service Tech drive with you so you can point out the issue ?

If that dealer didn't do BOTH - then they shrugged you off

Call Mercedes Customer Care Monday (800) 367-6372 with that Service Order/Invoice and tell MB Customer Care you are very disappointed and what to get it handled right - and you need a reference dealer order/invoice to get this back-channel-will-get-done-real-quick started thru Customer Care

On the GLE, the noise is generated by the driver's side mirror, specifically the gap that goes around the entire housing

And some have it, most don't, inexplicably.

That "gap" - is this the "groove" going around the mirror housing - called "rain channel" designed to deflect rain away from the mirror at highway speed... haven't looked close to see what has it and what hasn't

Did you ever get a solution to this problem? I have the same issue with my car. The noise is really irritating and I have turn the radio up to avoid hearing it whistle through the door/window.

Thanks!

No I didn’t get this resolved. To be honest I have not driven the GLS recently due to stay at home restrictions. With everything that is going on this seemed low in the worry scale. In the future I will see what can be done as it is annoying. Only happens above 50+ mph for me.

I have this issue too on my GLE and started a thread on it a few months ago. I guess the GLE and GLS share the same side mirrors. I tried the "electrical tape fix" on my $70,000+ car and it didn't really help. I too haven't driven the car much lately given the restrictions but I drove it this morning and the noise was there. I bet most people simply don't hear it or have their radio on but it is one of those things that after you hear it, it's all you can hear. It sounds like a low level tea kettle whistle. Frankly, this is ridiculous. When everything calms down I'll take it to the dealership but I suspect they will look at me and shrug.

The airflow - with the "little ribs" on the mirror case facing the body - is designed to flow on/over the driver's window to blow rain/snow off that driver's window..... just so you know..

Just got my GLS delivered 2 weeks ago and I have noticed that above 70+ MPH I hear a high pitched whistle sound as well. If I turn the radio on louder or if I go above 80+mph the sound/road noise will mask the whistle. However I will mentally know its always there and want to get it fixed. Does anybody have any updates from the dealer or fixing this issue? I have not had the time to bring the car in yet.

I went in twice for this thus far. First time they moved the door striker plate in by a millimeter or so and it helped reduce by ~40%.

I went in a few days ago (few weeks later now) and they said it was the sunroof that needed to be aligned better over driver side which I don’t think did anything. I never felt it coming from the roof but the door but they felt otherwiseZ

Problem is that once you hear it it’s hard to “unhear it”. It’s soft enough know that for a tech repairing the car (and if they have poor hearing) they may say it’s fine...

I got my car into the service yesterday with less than 400 miles (not very fond of) and they did acknowledge this issue. They said it was coming from the side mirror and they test drove the car with the side mirrors folded and the noise went away. They also test drove a brand new GLS in the dealership and apparently the exact same thing happened. They said they'll notify MBUSA about this issue and hopefully a service campaign will come out since I see on this forum that its a somewhat common issue. This really should not happen on any car, especially on a 100k car. Needless to say I'm pretty baffled about this whole issue and I guess we're SOL until MBUSA comes out with a fix.

  • It appears to be a design issue that should have been detected when MB was doing BETA testing the vehicle. I had similar issues years ago with an Acura. They changed mirror housing but never fixed the problem. Good luck with your issue. It’s very frustrating

I test drove one yesterday, and could hear it too. The only gripe I had about the car, otherwise loved it and definitely at the top of our list to replace our aging Toyota.

I have it also. It is very annoying. It is more annoying that every time I hear it I raise by left hand.

Went in for 3rd and final time. Took 2 drives with 2 service agents. First was in his 60s and said he has bad hearing...Second one heard it, they feel it is wind noise causing a resonance when it goes into the seal. Nothing to fix. Service dept was excellent to deal with overall though.

I'm confused, the service department told you a loud whistling noise whenever you go over 60mph in a $85,000+ SUV is normal and nothing to fix? Why has every other car I owned in my life not had this problem? All those other manufactures figured out the "resonance" going into the seal but MB? You think that is excellent service?

If it is a side mirror (housing) issue then that is the way they are designed. I agree that if so, then it's a terrible design. My Audi S5 and Q7 have none of these issues and are both 2 years old. There is no way the service department can redesign those. It is very high pitched, not loud, but subtle, and occurs mostly with wind gusts. One service adviser couldn't hear it. the 2nd one said maybe? he heard it (but I don't think he did). Sounds like this are very subjective... It's hard to fault someone to fix something that they can't hear. All of the seals look fine, nothing is bent. Everything appears tight.

They said I am not the first to complain about noises in the car. Unless Mercedes releases a recall (which I doubt they every would) I'm not sure what else can be done....

They did throw in a few Mercedes merchandise to make sure I left like I got something out of my trip.

To update my fellow GLS owners.. I ended up having this problem fixed (mostly fixed at least) at another dealership. I was following the GLE thread about the same issue on their cars and brought my car in for a second time at a different dealership.

X-Posting my post from there:

"I want to provide an update as I went to the same dealer/advisor after hearing from oakpek of his successful fix. My GLS with the same whistling sound was at the dealer for a week. For oakpek, his changing of the mirror cover + probably adding some felt in the seams worked, but it did not for me. They then proceeded to change a seal in the mirror, which also didn't work. Lastly they swapped out the entire mirror frame (the part where the mirror attaches to the door) and according to the tech it reduced the noise, but not fully gone. They were pretty much out of options at this point and opened a case with corporate MB, when the engineers instructed them where to place additional felt and apparently gave them specific instructions on how to put the whole mirror assembly back together. I'm not really convinced swapping the mirror cover helped in my case and it was more of placing felt and foam insulation at strategic locations and possibly changing out the mirror frame. But anyhow, they told me the noise was gone and after driving it for a day I think its 85-90% gone. I think I sometimes hear it if I try really hard with radio and A/C off, but I cannot be too sure if its really the sound or my brain is playing tricks on me now. Regardless, the sound is definitely much better for now and I will continue to look out for it. So thank you oakpek!!"

So to summarize, my noise is gone (I think, cross fingers) for now. A fellow member over there also came out with a very good fix using an O-ring, so you guys can see if you want to try that too if your service department won't budge. Happy to answer any questions if there are any.

That’s great information thank you. I found a small tiny hole above the left side view mirror trim. Not sure if this is but it improved when covered with electrical tape driving 70 mph. Maybe my mind playing tricks. They are replacing the window seal - coming in from Germany so part taking 2-3 weeks. Will tell them about the mirror housing insulation.
