Dynamic Select Driving Mode for Snow

Hi, in my 2017 GLS450 I could set the Dynamic Select knob on Slippery mode to drive on snow (and it performed reasonably well with all-season tires), but in my 2020 GLS450 the options are limited to E, C, S, off-road and individual. What is the recommended option for driving in snow? I don't have off-road/e-active body control options on the car and it runs on 20" factory M+S tires.

What does the manual say?

I would use comfort or off road. There’s no magic, the vehicle desensitizes throttle inputs and makes transmission shifting late and slow and prioritizes higher numerical gear. And early and often ESP/ABS/4ETS intervention. Air suspension might increase in height, check the. manual.

All the above with the goal of avoiding and mitigating wheel spin/slip.

Off road mode is quite good on the W166, I used it to good effect on some challenging Colorado 14er roads this summer.

Thanks! I had checked the manual before posting and couldn't find any specific info on the driving mode to select for snow. So my guess would be that either all driving modes in X167 are capable of adjusting to snow/slippery conditions (a bit too optimistic I know!) or that this is an area where X167 falls short compared to X166.

@rayzam What driving scenario are you thinking of? Driving to the shopping mall when it has snowed a bit, or fording 8” of white stuff on a steep gravel road?

It's mostly the former. No snow here in SoCal but we often drive up to Mammoth, Lake Tahoe or Utah for skiing. The roads are usually kept clear, but 2 years ago we were hit with a pretty strong snow storm in Mammoth and my X166 (with quite worn-down all-season tires) performed exceptionally well. I always carry chains but never had to use them so far.

No the car needs a slippery mode. Feels like the AWD keeps kicking on and of to save gas and causes the car to tail wag at expressway speeds. I'm thinking about selling this car since it is horrible for the winter when it's slippery. I recall my 2017 model doesn't have this problem.

I drove it in significant snow and ice (including Christmas snowstorm in Mammoth Lakes) mostly in E mode at various speeds and it performed well. Did you disable the ESP?

No, I didn't. Are you suppose to turn off ? That could have been an issue and I don't know if the cars has a limited slip diff. Before, there was that dial which worked well and easily to swich while driving.

I think it might help in certain conditions. This is what the manual says:

"It can be advantageous to deactivate ESP® in the following situations to improve traction:
- When using snow chains.
- In deep snow.
- On sand or gravel."

(PS: I do miss that dial in my old 17 GLS as well. The tech in my 2020 truck is amazing, but mechanically speaking, I am not sure if I like it better than my old truck)
