2021 GLS63 winter tires

Can anyone give recommendations as to set up for winter wheel and tire set up on their GLS63. The 2021 GLS63 currently has 23" wheels. Looking to go down to 22" or 21". The problem is that snow tires are a hot commodity, can't find anything close in size. Thanks

There's another thread here, and although it doesn't have a lot of the replies, the poll might be of interest.
https://mbworld.org/forums/gls-class...ter-setup.html

I'm waiting on a 580 with 22 wheels that I think is having too much fun tailgating in Alabama to come home. I plan to buy a set of winter wheels/tires when it comes.
I went on the MBUSA Tires site (google those words) and found Winter tires spec'd for 21" wheels. Whether the GLS63 can take that size, I don't know - but you might try that site. I prefer to stick with dealer options but others have been more creative if you search the forum 'winter tires' or 'winter wheels'.

When I bought my GL550, I worked with the dealer to buy a the wheel + tire package. So you might call your dealer parts department or ask your sales person if they can deal on that.

Not a damn thing from any tire supplier- this is a horrible issue for MB to be building these GLS580/GLS63/GLS600 Maybach without an available winter setup or an all-season option. This stagger setup is a money pit as well since there won't be any rubber good for more than 20k so there goes a couple grand more on top of the insanity displayed by dealers at a normal Service A/B stop. All for .01 g gain on the skidpad? I'm now skeptical about my 63 on order and wish I wasn't with nearly $150k on the line. I thought for sure this would be an iron clad product but there seem to be some real issues early, may be best to wait a couple model years? No one knows for sure but man my x166 '63 has been magical thus far, but I may move elsewhere for a couple Model Years until we see evidence of reliability from these X167's.

Now that I've vented- I believe there are some Vossen 21" that some owners have used with a 3% smaller total tire diameter for winter setups. I have also heard an SA at my dealer say he has sold a GLS63 winter wheel/tire from MBUSA but haven't seen the wheel. I also know Pirelli is making a very hard to find Scorpion Winter for the 22" stock size which also doesn't help you with those fabulous 23" beauties. I think most owners are finding things and piecing them together on their own, shame on MB for not having something ready.

It is indeed a serious situation when we can’t get proper winter tires in the OEM sizes. As of today, TireRack is only showing two summer tires in the 22” staggered size. Here’s hoping the Scorpion Winter comes out soon; an excellent snow or even year-round tire.

These are MO spec available in factory size 21inch in stock at TireRack today. If you can't get Mercedes wheels I recommend Vossen who can make custom size to match staggered fitment in 3 weeks and made in Miami. I put them on my GLS580.

For the '63 21" wheels are 275/50 and 315/45 rubber which is still impossible to find in a winter or a/s type so you put the miles on 3% faster on those.. : / Marchgroupinc, Your Vossen setup looks very nice on your ride!!

The MBUSA website speccification shows the standard tire is All season - a mistake or is that coming available in the near future?

Yes I’ve tried working with my dealer and at this point there are no available wheel/tires via dealer or mbtires. MB has 21” wheel/tire package spec’d for the GLS63 but I’m not sure if it’s the same as with the GLS580 21” wheel. I’ve tried looking for offset and caliper clearances via Google but not much out there. I believe the 63 has a larger caliper than the 580 and would hate to purchase the wrong wheel. The 2021 63 has a wider wheel rear track width than the 580 by 1.7”. The 580 is also about 1.6” taller than the 63.

per mbusa:
580 wheels (10.0x21 front and 11.0x21 rear)
Tires 275/45-21 and 315/40-21

63 wheels (9.0x21 front and 11.5x21 rear)
Tires. 275/50-21 and 315/45-21

pirelli does make a scorpion winter 22” tire for MB 22” rim. I can find the front tires but can not find rears.

I was wondering if anyone already has a set up on their 63 with specs. Thanks

I’m in talks with a local dealer for a GLS63 with 23”s but my big concern is winter safety.

I have been calling and emailing wheel and tire companies all over and think I found a good solution. There are two 22” tires that will work in a square fitment (not staggered because I want to be able to rotate wheels). The Nokian Hakkapeliita R3 and the Pirelli Scorpion both in 285/45-22. Both tires are low stock but available.

That tire size fits on rims from 9-10.5” width. Find a 22” wheel with 5x112 bolt pattern and offset from about +35-40 and you should be good. TSW, Mandrum and Niche make wheels that work.

Good luck,

I just installed 22" wheels/tires on my GLS 580 for my winter setup.

I've been struggling to find a winter setup for my '21 GLS 63 as well. Tire Rack does (did?) have a 20" fitment they were showing - which was a MSW 48 wheel in 20 x 9.5 with a ET52 offset. However, after ordering it, we found that while the inside radius of the wheel clears the calipers, the inside surface of the spokes does come into contact with the calipers. After some discussions they basically are having UPS pick up these wheels and said that they don't currently have a winter fitment for this vehicle.

My setup:

Wheels: 22x9” Niche M203 wheels with +27 offset. Pokes 5mm in front and tucks 12mm in rear. No rubbing, not issues.
Tires: Pirelli Scorpion 285/45-22 all around.

Purchased from BB Wheels from Troy, ext 1022.. The TPMS they sent that reportedly work for the 2020 GLS580 DID NOT WORK. My local Benz dealer got me the right ones.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Front fitment

Rear fitment. Slight tuck.

Gorgeous wheels. I had Vredestein Wintrac Pro installed on our GL550 in November. I like them a lot (cold, dry, wet, snow, ice here in Colorado) and Vredestein offers a good variety of tire sizes (up to 295 on 22").

Nice Set up!! How does it ride with straight set up? We just got 24" snow over the last 2 days and I could not take the 63 out. I saw BB Tires when I google. Will definitely give them a call.

Truck rides great on the 22”s and snows. Not quite as smooth as my wife’s GLS580 on the all season 21s but pretty good. I think the OEM 23”s are going to be a bit bumpy.

Hey X-ray, do you have Troy from BB wheels direct email by chance? I need all-season wheel/tire setup for a 2020 GLS 580 (currently have the 23" wheels, which are essentially summer only wheels lol)

Exact same set up I have on my 580. I opted for brushed metal instead of all black. The Scorpions are a perfect match for the vehicle excellent on dry conditions and excellent in the snow. The new variable 4matic of the GLS is much better than the one on the previous model. I've been driving on 6 in of now today and its like there is nothing there! Amazing! The new scorpions also seem more snow and ice worthy than my previous set of the same tires.

22” winter tires DO exist!

I now have in my garage a set of 4 winter tires that fit my factory 22” wheels! Pirelli Scorpion Winter in the staggered 285/45-22 F 325/40-22 R XL 114V sizes needed. That’s the good news. The bad news: $2,504 from my local MB dealer, unmounted. I know summer is still coming, but I’m now ready for fall!

Those are some wide tires!

What did you end up doing? I have a 2021 GLS63 and am interested in using the setup you have here, but I'm not savvy enough about tires and wheels to know if I'll have issues! I'm wanting to get the Pirelli Scorpions in 285/45-22 like you suggest. And I found some Mandrus Rotec wheels I really like. In the 22s, they have widths of 9, 10 and 10.5, with offsets of 37, 41 and 42, respectively. No idea what to do ... Anyone?!?

I just have a set of 21s of the same width as the front. As everybody else I have scorpions. They have mediocre snow performance but at least they are "decent" on dry winter snow conditions, it is what it is. The rims I got from tire rack actually look good. I would not recommend any bigger since snow performance is worse as the sidewall is reduced. Every spring I'm desperate to put the summer Contis back on since they are superb.
