2021 GLS 580
2021 Buy-backs

I had a recent conversation with my dealer and they offered to buy back my GLS 580 for MSRP after a year of owning it. Interesting times... Anyone else seeing the same?

I've been contacted a number of times to buy my GLS63 for over what I have in her. Some contacts from Sales Managers from various Merc dealers around the country but primarily in the south. One 3rd party wants first dibs if/when I sell her. Offered ridiculous number over retail but the problem still remains, what do I replace it with and how long to wait? Sold my 2014 911 Turbo Cabriolet in Aug for 30-40k more than what I would've got a year ago. That was an easy sale since I already had the 63.

GLS580 are selling at 125-150k right now used in my area

GLS63 175+ If there’s one. So yes the news of MB stopping production of the 580/63 variant for 2022 puts it in a supply vs demand for now.

Im sure MB will release a high performance replacement soon to fill the void and when they do it’ll change the market value on these again

A gaggle of MB's
Market Prices for Current-Year-Pre-Owned is "nuts" right now - as the result of the Low Production Availability.

A Dealer could say "if your GLS was a year old today with low mileage I could buy it now for MSRP" - whether you owned or leased.

No one knows if Supply Chain (steel, aluminum, plastics) will be Recovered for MY 2023 - once New Car Production recovers then Market Will Settle Back"

Also - please understand the term "Buy-Back" is specific to MB Legal Buy Back of warranty (ie. Lemon Law Cars).

"Cash Trade-In or Cash Purchase" is the correct term in this discussion.

OP had a "sloppy talking Sales Advisor" talking off-the-cuff - when frankly I am firm with my floor guys on "spot accurate talk" - since Customers Today who are paying Premium for their New or Pre-Owned Mercedes will be our Future Customers - and YES - this unique Market will be changing down the Road.

The other point is this - "most" other Manufacturers are reducing the # of their different models - Mercedes will KEEP and even broaden their their model base.

The Question my friends at MB Germany are not allowed to answer out loud to me yet - will MB's future be "fewer" #'s for each model at a future "higher model prices" ?

My discussion with my German friends for over the past 5-6yrs from my side is that Mercedes SUV's have had intentionally too-low/competitive MSRP - take a GLS in the low $80's 2yrs ago - today is MSRP high $80's and pushed Retail close to $100K - and is STILL competitive to what's out there.

The US manuf will be building Pick-Up's -

I recently traded in my Metris van that I had purchased in October of 2016 for pretty much of what I have paid 5 years ago. The van had only 38k miles and apparently, MB didn't get many imported from Spain this year. Yes, that is not unusual for a year old GLS to get what you bought it for.

This place is a joke.
Won't be the first one that was bought back!

Just to clarify, it wasn't a sloppy conversation. It went through their Finance org and Sales manager and they gave me a hard quote that I could take advantage of.

I think you're misinterpreting Fabbrisd1 was referring to. He wasn't saying that it wasn't a real offer, he was calling the terminology being used sloppy. The term "buy back" should not be when they're offering a trade in or cash offer to purchase the vehicle from you. On the consumer side, you may see it as either way it's an offer to take the vehicle for an attractive price. On their side, the two terms it can have very different legal meanings.
