The trouble I have with considering a move to non-staggered wheels is that the only wheels available have different offsets and I'm not sure how the vehicle would look with wheel faces that sit further inward. Going from OEM 22" wheels to OEM 20" wheels - assuming they clear the brake calipers on the 2024 (20" wheels are no longer offered from the factory on 2024s) - would pull the face of the rear wheels inward by 2.1" (53.6mm) and pull the face of the front wheels inward by 1.2" (30.2mm). 2.1" seems like a big change.

The 20s from my X166 do clear the calipers on my 2024 with a little bit of room to spare. I only tried them on the front and I'm happy enough with it to give it a shot.

I had 20s on my X166 as well and would have gladly taken those on my current GLS to avoid a staggered setup.
I finally got the Mercedes "official" 20" winter tire package for my 2024 GLS 580. They are 275/50R20. Sure, the rear tires looks a little skinny, but who cares; I'll use them for the next 3-4 months then back to the 22". The 20" are MUCH more comfortable for sure. Too bad there was no option to get the GLS 580 with 21" from the factory, the 22" are just too much.

They probably will. They actually gave me a quote for a 22" winter tire setup as well, but even though they could price it out, the front wheels were sold out for the season.

I have been waiting for 4 years for All Season 22's. The 22's with Summer Only tires were a forced option for Canadian GLS580 orders in 2020, so I accepted that and still don't have an appropriate tire to use those rims.
I was hopeful the Michelin Defender 275/50/22 and 305/45/22 would be my next set but Missourian said they did not fit well on the rear of the 11.5 inch wide factory rim.
Don’t mean to “hi-jack” this 22” thread….I’m the “lucky”’one who inherited the $3K “upgraded” 23” wheel package w summer tires and dealer won’t swap for 21” wheels (I’d buy the tires of course)…that said, wondering if anyone has fitted a 285/40/23 on the Rear 11.5” wheels? Michelin makes a Primacy AS and Pirelli makes a AS Zero as well as a Winter set (for LandRover), that will fit Front but unsure if I’ll get a quality seal on wider Rears.
Just want to add that everyone should cross shop the dealers around you. Sometimes they have better prices than the 3rd party shop and each dealer sets their own price so check all of them that you're willing to drive to: https://www.mbusatirecenter.com/
For example for winter 22" Pirellis, the price range is from $2400 to $2900 for the 4 dealers around me.
This is really good advice. I recently had a blow-out at night directly in front of a Munro auto service and tire center. It was a convenient place to break down, but it took almost a week to get an OEM Michelin Defender replacement. When I had the car serviced at my Mercedes dealer a couple of weeks later, I found out that the rest of my tires needed replacement. I had only 25K on the vehicle at that time and I was pretty shocked. Mercedes replaced the 3 remaining tires to OEM specs and it was about $150/tire cheaper than Munro, much to my surprise. When I got my vehicle, it had only a can of flat-fix and no spare. I understand that donuts are coming with 2024s.
As an aside - the standard 22" package on the 2024 GSL580 is absolutely terrible in 4" of snow - I'm stuck in my house because I can't get the car down my driveway - it just slides around, no traction whatsoever.

285/55R20 and 275/50R21 are both comparable to the 285/45R22 - it’s just math.
I’ve been playing with wheel/tire setups w all my cars, and had the pleasure of once working in that fun industry. The tire makers know what they’re doing and know the oe sizes that the luxe car manufacturers are using for their vehicles.
I used the GLS for hauling merch back and forth for work (in an industrial part of downtown LA) and on the weekends, she’s the family hauler. I opted for a set of 20’s and mounted them onto some beefier tires. Been rocking the overlander look for a good min and have had only the best experience with these tires. They are cheaper (compared to the stock MbZ options) and last forever.
