My GLS 580 with Panarama roof has severe crack and shattered roof. The fracture runs the entire width of the roof, Cracks run entire width of roof between windshield and panorama roof.
I just noticed while filling the tank and have no idea how this happened. Any help/advice on this problem?
Unfortunately nobody knows why this occurs and dealer will state it was a rock since there's no real way to prove otherwise. It doesn't appear to be a widespread problem but there are several threads of other owners (all models, not just yours) with similar cracking issue.
This happened on my brand new 2024 GLS450. Nearly identical crack as yours. I actually heard it when it happened and it sounded like a shotgun went off as I was driving. No way it was a rock, but that's what I was told and I couldn't prove otherwise. Cost nearly $3,000 to fix.
BTW, there is a huge class action lawsuit against MB for this and similar roof glass issues.

Here's the photo of mine ... cracked the entire way across.
No way a rock does that. A rock would have to impact the front edge of the glass to break it. A rock hitting the top would simply graze it as there is nothing to stop the rock from sliding off. The only way that happens from a rock is if the rock is dropped directly onto the top. Even then it should make an obvious hole as well. It is most likely uneven heating/cooling causing an expansion/contraction problem but it doesn't sound like MB will own up to that. This is why the windshield has the black dots, it helps the temperature in the glass to make a smooth transition from high to low temperature.

I think this was the same issue for the RDX rear window shattering as well, especially for cold region owners who use the defroster in the back!

I don't think this is limited to just sunroofs. I don't know many other manufacturers that install a black glass panel between the windshield and the actual sunroof.
You can find similar things happening with sunroofs all across the industry, this is not an issue limited to any one brand
