If you hear a ticking noise from your engine, especially on idle, it seems to be a very common issue on many Mbenz cars especially the GLE and GLS and many other models.... There is a good chance it is the Evap purge valve. You can easily tell by opening the hood and track if the noise is coming from where that valve is right under the air filter intake duct.
It should be covered under warranty. My dealer is replacing it at no charge, but it's a cheap 75 USD valve. You can also confirm by simple unluging the connector on that valve and see if the noise goes away.
Seems to be very common part that was installed on so many Mbenz from years ago all the way through 2023/2024. Mbenz had finally revised the design and has a new part number that replaces the old one.
I will report back if I see better mileage with time.
Note: I've been EXTREMELY happy with our GLS. It's been almost a year (soon) and it never needed a single service or maintenance item. Not a single creaking noise... No complains a all. Very smooth engine, very powerful with the 48V electric boost, great quiet interior, really really really love this car. It will take sooo much for us to switch back to the X7 even though that's what my wife is hopping to do (though we know the GLS is the better car). GREAT SUV and awesome reliability at least in my case so far.

Thanks for posting about this, I do see this issue starting to pop up on the forums.
Very unlikely; I realized that we had this noise in our GLS from the very beginning including winter months… I just assumed it was normal because it’s truly close to being normal. I bet most owners have this noise and they don’t realize their evap valve needs to be replaced or causing that sound. From what I learned, the valve would still be doing it’s job, perhaps not in an ideal manner, but wouldn’t be causing issues like vibration or check engine like or so.
Having said that, most people start thinking about their cars, look for noises and issues, around spring and summer anyway. I actually try to time my oil change intervals to be around mid of summer (June/July) even if I have to do the very first maintenance a few months early for a car I may have bought in Nov-Dec.
I don’t want to get a GLA loaner in the middle of snow or winter…. But I can live with it just fine during summer.

Interesting, thank you both, I was thinking it might had been because of summer as well guess that wasn't the real cause.
Hey, I just picked up my very first X167 580. Mine is making a ticking noise but I cannot find that part to save my life. Do you have any photos or tutorial? Thank you!

This is an excellent post, sorry I missed it for this long, thanks for sharing S_W222!
Whenever our gas tank is above ¾ full, we get the helicopter sound at idle. I know some have gone in to the dealer, had gas tanks and whatnot removed/replaced. The only logical explanation is the evap system somewhere, as it only happens when the tank is nearly full. I'm wondering if this may be it.
I'm planning on a major reset to ours next spring for another 100k. Motor / Transmission mounts, PCV, full flush of transmission through cooler lines, all fluids again, plugs again, new brakes, etc. I'll add this to it as well. Mechanically, the only thing that concerns me is the the 48v battery itself someday, otherwise I see no legitimate reason why this i6 engine shouldn't see 200k pretty easily, especially since the electric hybrid motor takes so much of the early launch strain off the ICE itself. I don't know about how others drive, but ours barely sees 2,500 rpm on a routine basis.

You're welcome.
This issue is very common that Mbenz had to switch to a new part number now. The same evap is used among many other Mbenz models by the way.

I forgot to report back: I have not noticed a measurable increase in MPG. However, it's been 6 months and the new part is doing its job (no ticking noise at all).
No major recurring issues so far with this SUV after 1.5 years now, other than the rear trunk motor needing a replacement (would stuck from time to time), service mileage stuck, and honestly a very disappointing single-event when the accelerator pedal lost signal at an intersection which really disturbed the joy of owning this GLS but it never happened again since then (dealer claimed a software update, but really did nothing). Otherwise, the GLS has been a very good and capable SUV for our family.
