SL55 vs CBR1000 RR

Sometimes when the drive is the most boring.....you get to have a little fun!

I was heading back to Phx from Palm Springs. The cruise set on 95. The traffic was pretty light...and they were moving out of the way for a change!! I notice up ahead that there is a sport bike that I am gaining on. He's probably doing about 80-85. As I cruise past him, I must have woken him up...as it was obvious that he wasn't going to let some 'car' pass him. Well..........it wasn't some car........it was a derestricted SL55 with a bit more power and torque.

Now, as I had my carbon based biological speed control device(CBBSCD) on board (skitish girl friend) there could be no real shananigans. As I glance to my left I see the CBR has caught up and is pacing me. As I look to my right......she's sound asleep. Just as I think I may be able to have a bit of fun.........I hear the bike downshift to show me who's boss.

I quickly blipped down 2 gears and was on it hard. So hard in fact that he never got a jump. As I pulled through 3rd, I heard him try for another gear.......it was hopeless. I am now towards the top of 4th......165+ and the CBR is just a dot in my rear view.

Just as I let off the gas my CBBSCD woke up and asked me how fast we were going. I looked to the right and told her everything was fine. I looked to my left and there was the CBR giving me the thumbs up. We drove into PHX together. The traffic cleared for both of us!

excellent sportsmanship on both drivers parts. Its always nice to hear stories like this where both drivers respect each others rides.

I was pleasantly surprised. Sometimes you get the whole attitude thing when its all over.

There was a nasty crosswind the entire drive back. I can't imagine trying to control a sport bike at high speed with a mean crosswind was alot of fun. From riding my Ducati in those conditions, I know the deal. There was probably a pretty high pucker factor on his part. As for me, I had the AC and the seat massager going. It just wasn't fair!

IngenereAMG,

Do you think you can handle a SL65? Also, whats you're 1/4 Mile time?

I drove a 65 and thought that it was a little heavy in the nose. I sold my contract. It was very quick, but I thought that it was all engine and I like a more well rounded car with handling being more important than straight line speed. I think that the SL55 has more than enough power.......for me. (550/550)

As far as 1/4 mile time.....I have no idea. I've done 1:07 at PIR and 1:46 at Laguna Seca.

Actually, in my experience the crosswind becomes less and less of an issue the faster you go (the bike gains stability). Thait said, the reaction to side wind varies a lot between two bikes.

Sorry not to be an *******, I'm calling bs on this, a 1000cc bike should take any street legal car. Everyone one of my buddies have 1000's and I can't even keep up with them in my friends chipped sl55.

Great kill!!
I know a guy who got his a$$ handed to him by a 360 Modena.
The guy was driving a 600 GSXR (I think) and his buddy was driving an R1??
Anyways, the 2nd bike was a 1000 cc and it got beat by the Modena at around 240-250 km/h (ie 150-155 mph)...
If the Modena can do that, then I'm sure a chipped/de-restricted SL 55 AMG can do the same thing...

Possibly at high speed, but my E55 isn't in the same league as my CBR1100XX, especially from a standing start. A stock CBR1000RR is as fast as my bike, so it would be pretty surprising to see it lose to even a chipped SL55. If so, congratulations are definitely in order.

Yeah right I love fast cars, and you have a great car. The bike was probably a 600 and he was not a good rider. My 05 R1 would easily wheelie past you at 120 mph and spank your car at any role on speed. I can honestly say that the speed of a superbike is something everyone should experience. Its way more of a rush than sky diving. My bike weighs 425 lbs and has 180 HP,,,, do the math....
1/4 mile times of 9.9@145,,,, nice story though.

I call BS as well!!!! Being an Ex-R1 owner I can personally attest to the power to weight ratio of a 1000cc bike against any street car...AMG or not - it was probably a 600cc bike with a poor rider...socal benz555 I'm gettin my MV Agusta this summer when I move back to cali....ride on!

Yes and also angeles crest and ortega, etc. cops are out to stop canyon riding with helicopters. They pull over entire groups of bikes. Go to bike night in HB

A modena can't. A bad rider can surely make bikes look bad. At the standing km, 1000cc + bikes are in the 17-18s. I came across a 575s Maranello once. We stayed below 150, below 150 the bike was pulling badly.

I'm sure they went up to 170 mph....but that is the story...

WOW! This has caused quite the disturbance from the armchair racers!

The race was an 80-90mph roll on. Sure the bike has a better power to weight ratio...however, in the real world, when speeds start getting up there (140-150+)...the biker has a hell of a lot more to lose than the car. As I said, there was a serious cross wind. Perhaps discretion was the better part of valor that day for him. I ride regularly and conditions affect bikes more than cars.

I saw the post from Mr. 120mph wheelie.........I'm sure that you are quite the rider. But the real world is the real world. That's what happened, and we both lived to tell about it....and it was a CBR 1000RR.
