Experiences in CLK500

Of course, everything posted below is done legally and on the Autobahn in Germany

When the weather is warm here, there are amateur car shows. During these nights, all the street racers come out wanting to drag at red lights. People bring out cars, ranging from riced civics to Lamborghinis. I always show up mostly out of curiousity and to just have fun. I've had a lot of races, but one of my most memorable was when I raced a Jaguar XKR.

I pull up right next to the Jag at a red light. My friend was in the car. I had all my windows down, and he had his top down. I told my friend who was with me that this is the supercharged, top of the line Jag and that he'd smoke me without trying. So, after making excuses so that I wouldn't look like an idiot when I lost, I asked the guy if he wanted to race. He had shades on and was trying to act all cool. He agreed and was trying to act all chill. Anyway, bottom line is the light turned green and we both got pretty good launches. We were both about dead even up to about 45mph. Then, from then on I slightly pulled on him. We definitly passed a quarter mile because of the speed we were at. The road was pretty much a straight road, though there was one part where it has a little curve. When we slowed down because of traffic, I tried to talk to the guy but he wouldn't even look at me. He just looked straight ahead without even acknowledging me. I'm not sure why I was able to beat him though since he has 390hp. Perhaps he had a weak car?

Another race was against a Mustang with straight pipes. I'm not sure if it was a GT or Cobra, but probably a GT since I've heard that Cobras are incredibly fast. Anyway, we were both at a red light. I was all the way in the left lane where its a left turn only. He was revin' his engine, so I knew he was lookin' for some fun. I revved back and it was on. I cut to the right in front of the car to the right and just totally blew away the 'stang. We stopped at the next light, and he was pretty cool. He asked what kinda engine I had. I told him his car sounded awesome. It was all nice and

Last weekend I challenged a Dodge Viper SRT10 Coupe to a race. He was an old guy who didn't seem like he wanted to have any fun (or maybe his wife in the passanger seat wouldn't let him). He was revving his car and it sounded sooo powerful. Unfortunately, we didn't get to race. However, I was able to chase him onto a parkway, where he flew up the on-ramp. I was kinda suprised that he didn't just blow me away, I was kind of able to follow him, Lol. I pulled up next to him and started hitting the gas and downshifting, hoping he would run with me. He just waved and laughed. A Hyundai coupe pulled up and tried racing the Viper too. When he wasn't able to race, he tried going against me. Obviously, I smoked him.

Tonight I was able to run against my friend with his M3 SMG Coupe. We couldn't find any good places, so after trying a couple of roads and a parkway, we finally wound up on the thruway. We raced from 65-1something. It was really fun, but it was kinda scary when the road was totally curved and you're going at high speeds. I found that the CLK500 is very close in speed, however the M3 was always able to pull on me. But it wasn't as much as I thought it would be. I think a CLK55 would be able to beat an M3. We would have run again, but he couldn't because one of his rear tire's treads was totally worn out and we didn't want it to get too dangerous. I felt that the M3's biggest advantage was its SMG. It seemed like he had instantaneous power, whilst I had to wait for the downshift to feel the g-forces. It seemed like he was also able to take the turn a little bit better than me (although he has much more experience than me and he knows exactly what he's doing). All in all, I was impressed with the M3 and he was impressed with the CLK500.

I'm hoping to hit a real dragstrip when the weather warms up a bit, this way I can get accurate 1/4 mile times and not worry too much about whiping out or crashing or getting arrested.

my little brother has a m3 smg.
at the track he takes off quicker and then i reel him in.
i get at least a 1 1/2 mph higher trap speed.
the times are about even, it depends on my launch, sometimes i beat him and sometimes he beats me. my trap speed is always higher though.
i smoked a old viper (heavily modded w/ a roll cage) on the freeway in traffic.
empty freeway, no chance
i also raced a xkr conv. and beat him on the freeway in light traffic, my car was visibly faster

Nice kill. I'm shocked you're able to find places in NY. In Jersey, I usually go to 287 for a nice run.

Jaguar....
I do remember reading somewhere that the SC Jag engines are rated at 390HP around 6200RPM, but the odd thing is the rev limiter kicks in before then, so you really don't get 390. Never made sense to me.

Thanks everybody . I usually just race people out of curiousity and for fun. I know the CLK500 isn't an AMG, but it still has some pretty good torque numbers and its usually just enough to help me pull through against most cars. My father has an SL55, so I can definitly feel the difference between his car and mine.

I'm about 20 minutes north of NYC. Everybody usually meets up at a parking lot on Route 100 (Central Park Ave.) in Yonkers/Scarsdale. Though, I've recently heard that people are starting to ditch Central Ave because of cops and they are finding places upstate where they can get some nice runs and not be bothered.

287 is where I tried racing the Viper...I find 287 is pretty nice for having fun.

I can't wait to hit the tracks (I've never gone to one before). I've heard there is a good one in New Jersey, I think it's Englishtown.

Does anybody know if there are any Mercedes gatherings around NY? A lot of my friends who drive Nissans and Mitsubishis have been going to gatherings and telling me about how much fun it is to meet other drivers of the same car. I'm hoping that there are some meets around here when the weather warms up because I would love to meet with fellow Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts.

u'll b surprised at how close a clk500 is to a 55, i was
to 70 ill pull about 3/4 to 1 car length, if i get a good launch, the 500 is much easier to launch.

You are welcome to join our tri-state meets in North jersey. Next one will be in the springtime. Watch for announcements in the Events forums.
We try to have at least one person representing each state in the tri-state area. Sometimes, it really happens.
