Those Audis and VWs are a good bang for the buck.
For around $25K (relative price for a new C230 Kompressor) a person can get a VW GTI which is faster out of the box, and easier (and cheaper) to make even faster.
If it were my money, I would get the VW, and even spend a little more to get the VW R32 Golf, which is a real fun car.

I know this is kind of late since you posted this in january but did your son get a chip yet?? If not, tell him to look at Giac or Revo. I used to have a 2002 Jetta 1.8T and the Revo chip gave INCREDIBLE results. I had alot of issues with APR chip so be careful with them if he is looking at it. they are the kleeman, Brabus or (whatever the best turner for benz is) of Audis/VWs. I have to disagree with the C class being the slowest of the bunch. I recently took my C55 in service at FJ Newport and they gave me a 2006 C280 loaner vehicle with six speed manual auto and I was quite impressed with the performance after I floor the sh*t out of it and upshift / redlining every gear. Mercedes is really stepping up with the C class against the new bimmer 3 series.
