Pulled a new 911 Turbo, curious which version?

Curious if anyone here knows if the pre 480Hp Porsche 997 Turbos have a single rake/grill within the side intake vent over the rear tires (ie for the brakes)?

I had Franz driving a black 911 Turbo weaving traffic yesterday to get behind me on the 270 degree freeway on ramp yesterday morning. His car started sidestepping a bit as we pushed our cars (sorry, I was with the wife in my RX7, not our SLK). He had to let up a bit , but then proceeded to nail it as I had let off a bit as we strightened out for the long entry to the Hwy. I floored it, stopped his momentum, & then put about 7 cars on him from 45 mph to about 130 mph. There was little to no traffic but I let up. He proceeded to "run away" (weaving through what little traffic there was at 90 mph+ so I said forget it - I'm not into sustaining a high rate of speed on public roads - despite sparse traffic). My RX7 is now running 410 rwhp @ 16 lbs.

I had noticed the rear brake intake having a single horizontal vane. Was that a new 480Hp Turbo or the prior 450Hp (X50 option)? The internet queries I've been running have not helped much to show if the prior versions had this "vane". Is the new Turbo out?

Thanks,
-Matt

the new ones have a single vane over the rear intake...you could also tell the 997 version very easily by either the wing or the headlights. C&D just tested the new turbo with overboost feature(+60 torque):
0-30 1.1
0-60 3.4
0-100 7.8
1/8 11.7

so you have one fast rx7!!!

Thanks - I just looked at C&D. And although the air intake looks like the new Turbo, his rear end & tail looked like the old one (I think....I didn't study it that long & just blew it off). I think it was an older Turbo judging by the pics of the rear end in the C&D article. Maybe the guy bought the new intake - I dunno - doesn't really matter I guess. Thanks for the pointer to C&D Falco.

NICE KILL

Supercharged SLK55, Tricked out RX-7.....I like where your head is at!

Only way my W210 E55 can beat that 911, would be if the Porsche was parked.

The 996 Turbo came with 414bhp or 444bhp with X50/S. A lot are tiptronic in the U.S. and until the 997 tiptronics were about half a second slower and 5mph slower.
The 996TT didn't have the vane but I've seen one or two who have added it. The 996 GT2 has a vane across its front intakes but not the rears.
The 997TT is very much out, but they're still very rare.
If it was a 996, nice kill. In the unlikely event it was a new one, v nice kill!

Thanks Carl. I know my RX7 is as quick as a new C6 Z06 (pulled one last weekend by 1.5 cars from 70 to 130 mph....VERY tight). So, I think you are right.....it must have been a 996 Turbo with a vane because he got pulled way worse than the Z. You also mentioned you've seen some 996 T's with a vane so I'm betting that is what I ran against. The Z was very close to my RX7...that Turbo - quick but not as quick as that Z I ran 3 wks ago. If it was a 997 TT, it would have been closer (my guess).

Thanks for the input - glad someone else has seen a vane on a 996TT (I was a little confused ). The 911 has been out for so many years, I think its become more difficult for me to differentiate between each successing version (at least with Turbo variants). Its been a darn successful platform for Porsche. They are very nice cars.

with 400rwhp in that little Yellow Go-Kart, you're going to pull on a lot of cars man. RX-7's are deadly fast and they handle like nothing ever. You've basically got yourself a giant killer.

Thanks. The yellow car is pretty sprite but I don't think your Supra has anything to worry about.

Here is a pic - just fyi. See ya.

Fikse FM10s...good guess - you were very close! You must know RX7s? Yes, the color is "Competition Yellow Mica" (fancy name for metalic yellow IMO ). 1 of 350 ever made (only for the R1 model & only in 1993).

Hey, I'm trying to convince a guy at work to get a clean/well taken care of Supra so he can have a nice 4 seat sports car that is pretty plush & well built vs getting a new 911 (he isn't looking forward to those payments). He's got 2 little boys (one is 5, the other 3?). There is enough room back there for 2 little tikes, isn't there? Thanks for the help!

Jesse, the RX7 & SLK are clean since they have never seen rain & I wash them once a week - just a hobby like you & Cylinder . See ya Buddy.

You can definitely fit 2 little guys back there. My back seat has long since been removed, but I'd say there is room, just make sure the seats are all stock, racing seats are not designed with rear passengers in mind (like my Sparco's). I'm familiar with the Yellow Mica color, but I've never seen one in person.

My Royal Sapphire Pearl badboy is one of only 21 in America. They really didn't make a lot of them, which I think will help when it comes time to part with my child.

Thanks for the suggestion brother but I would NEVER suggest bringing a child in this car. Its only for the brave, or the foolish.

Thanks for the feedback - I thought there was enough room back there for 2 little dudes! Cool. Thanks for the confirmation Cylinder.

Yellow R1- What does your car run in the 1/4? I'm asking cause you say you beat an C6 zo6 by 1.5 cars to 130 and I'm having a hard time believing that. I'm not knocking, just want some clarification.

I'd like to know too. However, I don't have a hard time believing it. I'm sure that Rx7 weighs close to nothing... relatively speaking that is.

For some reason I don't have a problem driving fast ... just hate being the passenger.

Oh I don't care - its no big deal - no offense taken. Yes, the black Z wanted to tango (sped up got next to me & downshifted so I could hear his 427 ).
So, we had 3 pulls - same outcome each time.

My RX7 weighs 2,650 lbs (500 lbs ligher than the Z so my car has a slightly better power to weight ratio). 3rd gen RX7s also come stock with 4.10 rear ends which help them accelerate pretty well. Turbo cars typicaly pick up some power on a roll due to the cold air charge for the turbochargers (assuming you have a good IC & mine is the best I could locate with an 88% efficiency rating). See ya.

Jesse - you did look a little "wide eyed" when I took you for a run. Next time we'll turn the boost up some more.

There is nothing cooler than ripping a 7 liter car in a 1.3 liter car. Wanna talk smack about "no replacement for displacement"? Hysterical. Turbos are the replacement for displacement.

How about displacement AND forced induction?

Just for reference 5.5liter SUPERCHARGED

Jangy, could your car take a new Z06? Nope. Everybody here knows and loves the 55k engine, but it has its limitations and one of those is the fact that they're bolted into porky autos.

You wouldn't want to tango with either of our Japanese cars on the road.
