CLK320 W209
c36
I myself drive a 96 C36. I can tell me my C36 keep up with my friend's 03 350Z very well (right after his rear bumper at 100km and slowly catching up to his door at 140km). The C36 has a smooth higher rpm rev which spins faster and allow me to get close to the 350Z.
The C36 is not much slower then the C43. The C43 has 5 speed with 3.06 final drive vs 2.8 in the C36 4 speed) and the weight is about the same. All i can say is the C36 engine spins much faster then my CLK320 (m112 and m113 engine). I had a SLK55, i felt the engine ran out of steam pass 5k rpm because of the 3v per cyclinder also singal head cam.
out of the three cars i had, i would rate C36's M104 engine 1st and SLK55 M113 2nd. The M112 is slow however it is more quite than the M104.

The guys bringing gearing into this discussion are right. I can't imagine the two being much different in straight line acceleration...time wise. However, where the difference occurs is the driving feel, due to one sporting a 3.6 I6 and the other a 4.3 V8.
