S500 slips by Lexus IS 350

I was headed home on a long stretch of 6 lane highway with no traffic and stoped at light next to a Lexus IS 350. I wasn't really sure what that car was exactly so I pulled away in comfort mode. Suddenly the Lexus pulled away quickly so I thought I would check it out...nailed the throttle, kicked down a gear and got even with his rear door before we both had to slow for the next light which afterwards opens up for about 5 miles.

Windows came down and he looked at me and said "You wanna do it?"...I said "Let's drag it out and see what you've got" I went to S mode and crowded the light with a power brake against the converter. The light went green and we launched hard. The IS 350 pulled me about 1/2 length to about 60 but by 80 I had him by a full length. He held on strong 1~2 lengths back and I suddenly picked up Ka1 on the Beltronics as we broke 100. I lifted instantly and so did he with a hard brake. The Ka1 became 2...3...4...5...Florida Highway Patrol in on opposite side of the road approaching.

By this time I was sucking up the seat covers watching FHP do a U turn and start to follow. I set the cruise control on 55 for about 2 miles untill FHP turned off.

Just then the IS pulled to my left and asked "You wanna go from a roll?" What a ballsy SOB. " It's too hot out here tonight" I said..."you surprised me though" He said "I was quicker to 60 but by 70 you pulled even and moved ahead...I'm surprised that big car moves that well". "Torque" I said. He nailed it and took off into the darkness...slowly going out of sight.

I cruised along about 3 miles and started to see the blue light ahead. As I got closer...guess who? He just wouldn't leave it alone...the IS 350 and a E320 CDI pulled off with FHP!!!...No body made any money on that deal except the State of Florida...be careful out there.

good write up and that 5L engine is quite something for being 'oldie but goodie'

my cousin has an IS350 and he has never challenged my C32. Now he is dying to get a 335i to keep up, at which point he will have to face the E55.

1) he knows I have pullies 2) he knows torque wins races

That 7-spd really does it eh? I would get my *** handed to me against a IS350.

either your car is really fast or he had a floor mat stuck under his pedal

dont get me wrong, im not calling at all, but is350's do low 5's to 60 and mid 13's 1/4

good kill

02 CLK 55 AMG,09 C63 loaded with P30
The last time they tested the IS350 and the 07 G35 sedan 6spd both 306hp the IS ran mid 13s beating the G35 which ran high 13s. This result was in a auto mag. Stock S500 have 302hp runs mid 14s the lbs kills them.

2004 S500
As I said, he beat me solid out of the hole...but it was close. After 60 I pulled away 1~2 lengths till we hit close to 100. The IS 350 weighs about 3500 lbs and makes about 275 Ft. Lbs of torque at close to 5000 RPM. The S500 weighs about 4100 lbs and makes about 340 ft. lbs. of torque at about 3000 RPM but has close to that from 1800~4000 RPM.

I was surprised I put 1~2 lengths on him between 60~100...but that was it...he never lost any more or gained any more. The question is...would he have pulled closer and passed after 100? Maybe...but on that stretch of pavement at that moment the S500 "slipped by"

It was a good run and I was surprised as to how quick the IS 350 is...but again it's a small car with a relatively strong engine. It's supposed to be quick.

I wonder what the difference would be with a full passenger load in each vehicle?

I'm not overly suprised by the outcome. With all the cars I've beaten with my CLK500, I can see an S500 pulling an IS350 at higher speeds.

540 6spd
I've test driven the new IS350 more than once. I can tell you that 0 - 90mph race they are fast. I had a buddy driving my 540 once when I was in the IS350 and I was pulling away convincingly at lower speeds.

However, they are geared poorly. Once they shift into 4th at around 90+ they hit a wall almost. Out on the freeway the IS350 felt no faster than my car and although we didnt get to do a proper run, the 540 had no problem keeping up w/ it. I've also fooled around w/ a friend and his S500 (5spd box) and it seemed about as fast as my car was.

The story seems about right to me.

I guess anything could happen on the streets but I'm surprised. I drove the IS350 and it reminds me of an E46 M3 not too mention it's a 13 second car.. I can't see a S500 running anywhere with an IS350. And I know an S500 nor a 540i can run anywhere near my BMW M332i(modded).

But I guess who knows, you were there.

I killed one on Interstate 10 between Hoover and La brea exits last week in two runs from 45mph-95mph. It was dark so distance is trick but he would fall immediately back and continue to. Ricer fly-by on the second run signalled the end of the fun and to think i'd even missed my exit for the punk.

Maybe it's the ridiculously huge wing mirrors which slow it down at speed!

An IS350 is definitely faster than a 540i in a race from a dig. Its In a flying start race at like 75mph or so it becomes close. I can't find the link for IS350's specs, but 3rd gear ends around 90mph and after that you're stuck in 4th from 90mph to about 125mph iirc.
