560SL vs. E36 M3

Yeah, I know this sounds crazy but I am pretty sure I killed this guy. So I am driving back from a tabla (east indian drum) practice in the 560, when I see this blue E36 M3 with a really weird kid inside of it. Anyways I wanted to **** around with him (just relieving some stress). Now my friends dad has an E36 M3 and the car is very fast but I still wanted to see how I would do. We begin to approach a tunnel when I shift down to second gear at around 35-40 mph (some of you may know that the 560's prime area is from around 35-40mph to about 100) and hear him shift down. After a few moments in the tunnel he floors the car and I just pull on him, maybe 1.5 car to 70mph. Now at first I though maybe he really did not go at full potential or maybe he just gave up thinking that racing in a tunnel is plain stupid, but after I that he never came next to me. I would slow down to give him a acknowledge the race but he would slow down even more to the point that he was way under the speed limit. So I just went on my way. Any input would be great.
thanks

Hey man, anything can happen on the street. You have the torque advantage in that scenario, which is especially abundant in 2nd gear at 40 mph. On paper, the M3 is clearly the faster car. May not be anywhere as classy as an R107, but it's more so the sports car. Could have been a 328 rebadge (and those aren't slouches either). Or, he could have missed a gear. But, excuses aside, you had some fun and outran a faster car.

V8 power !

I've witnessed a 560 SEC turn a 14.70 quarter mile. Driver's race for sure.

Sounds very possible as U.S. spec E36 M3 only puts out 240bhp.

In Europe we got a 286bhp first version which was soon uprated to a 321bhp 3.2 in the E36 M3 Evo. I had a '98 Evo edition coupe in Estoril with cream interior. I miss that car.

I raced a manual E36 from 40-140 and from 0-140, I was very impressed with the acceleration. From the launch I had him easy but when we were rolling it was definitely a race.

Great kill!

And what does it run?

mid-to-high 14's.

Good race for the Benz.

thanks for the replies, but I am pretty sure he was racing, because it sounded like it and why would he stay so far back?

Depends upon what source you look at....others ran mid 14s. With a good driver (not guaranteed), with a manual, with a good launch (helps 60' time, lowers 1/4 mile time). Take any of these factors away, throw in any screwups, low shift points, or the possibility that an E36 M3 could also be an auto, which was slower, etc...

And this doesn't account for driver reaction times. In rolling-start races, it's a virtual certainty that both drivers aren't going to nail the throttle at exactly the same time....if one driver nails it and then the other reacts and nails it, that can easily give up a second for the second driver to realize the first driver is racing, to make decision to race, to shift, punch it, etc....

This is why timed 1/4 mile runs are always best....you can beat someone's reaction time, but the clock doesn't lie!!

Is there something wrong with your C32?

No way stck or modded should that car be keeping up with you at high speeds unless F/I.

my m3 is modded but either way. they aren't slow and a 560 should not be able to keep up with even a stock one.
