SLK55 vs Boxster S

Ok, this wasn't a fair race I know but he asked for it. Pulled up to a light next to a silver Boxster S with red calipers. When I was pulling up I didn't think much of it being just a Boxster, didn't think he would want to race until I saw it was an S. The cocky level that comes with an S is so much higher than the regular boxster for not much more 'go' in them.

I was kind of back a bit so my hood was even with his side window. Didn't want him to see what I was or hear the exhaust just for giggles. All he knew is it was a SLK of some kind. Light turns green and I accelerate normally keeping pace next to him. He got annoyed and floored it. I did the same and quickly overtook him and left him for dead, by 100 he was way back. I slowed down to normal speed and he wouldn't get any closer and just hung back. Fun, but too easy.

What year Boxter?

The new ones with the 295hp are pretty nice cars, I'd have to say...

Though, I don't think any 55 will loose to one, unless they really bogg it on the launch, because even with someone really ready to destroy their clutch and is amazing at shifting, I think the 0-60 time is low 5s still.

It is fun to race them though. This older gent saw me in my car, he was with his wife, and he revved his engine at me. It was the newer model, don't know which engine it was though, and as I look over he's grinning and cocking his head toward the road and his wife is shaking her head. Needless to say, all he saw were my quad exhaust afterwards.

I'm not sure what year it was. They all look the same to me. It looked fairly new though.

Rare they'd have the nerve. He can't have known cars. Usually they cower and pull in behind on a two way light. One came alongside one time but soon realized their sports car didn't have that much "go."

Around here Boxsters think they're hot stuff, and an S model just makes it worse. Not many expensive and fast cars out my way unlike LA. I even had an old Boxter, paint was faded and probably a late 90s model, try to race my E55 when I got it. I was on the highway and he pulled up next to me and he just kept egging me on, speeding up then slowing back down. I eventually got tired of it and let him have it. So annoying.

You're quite right about the S model Boxster owners.

When I was in Dallas last December I noticed the E46 M3 was very popular there. Great car but often driven by boy racers. The Boxster I really don't like as a car. Apparantly it handles well and it's a Porsche so it will stop well but it's true the owners just love having that P-car badge rather too much.

Nice work in the 55k, likely short work too.

The new S is indeed nice I'd love to have one if I moved out to the country

However, an owner trying to drag race a 55k probably has no clue (or just wanted to hear the 55 at WOT)

I was in LA this past weekend. First time in CA. I saw my first Ferrari. I've never seen one before. In fact I saw a whole bunch of them; along with some AMs, Bently's, every kind of Porsche except the CGT. Didn't see any lambos though. I saw every modern make of Mercedes within about 30 minutes out there. Even the new CL. The hotel I stayed at had a couple Ferraris, a black 430 and a yellow 360 spyder stood out, in the parking lot among other things. I swear I could stand outside the hotel on the sidewalk and more money would drive past me in 10 minutes than I would see in a whole month here.

I see a number of M3s, I'm out east of Dallas a ways. A Porsche sighting of any kind is rare here, mostly Boxsters but sometimes you'll see a 911. That's as 'exotic' as we get. The biggest go fast thing you'll see is the Mustang GT. They're everywhere here, it's an infestation.

Very short work

There's a lot of money out here, and a hell of a lot more of people here willing to go into debt to look as if they're millionaires.

Very surprised you didn't see a Lambo. They seem to outnumber the Ferrari's 2:1 here, Gallardos are everywhere. A few Carrera GTs kick about, as do SLRs. I see a couple every month, not counting the SLR I pass on my commute. There's one Veyron I know of but that doesn't make it out much. The Phantom is popular here too.

To be honest, the overall appeal of the E55 is hard to beat in my opinion. Just the right amount of subtle flash and a whole lot of go.

Anyway, cool you saw your first Ferrari. Hope the rest of the trip went well.

I don't know. We got 'em all here for sure (including two CGT's for sale at the local exotic used car lot), but I saw a bunch of cars in Houston recently. I was telling my host about the S65 when one appears making a left in front of us as if on cue.

Yep, Houston has two Carrera GTs too. A friend of a friend owns one but that's too tenuous of a link for me to score a drive.

Boxters are modern day 944s

They're not contenders with AMG and M cars. They're more like "sporty" cars.

Case in point. I destroyed a first gen Boxter S with my 2004 Volvo S60R. It was one of the best drag races I've ever had...

It was this middle-aged guy with a corny hat on and his kid. He looked over at me at a light and I chucked at him and revved my blender-like I5.

He shook his head and laughed....big mistake.

When the light turned green, I launched all 4 wheels on the poor Volvo and made a perfect hole shot. By the time I was out of 2nd gear, he was 2 car lengths behind me. I shifted into third, stuck my arm out the window, waved, and gave him the "thumbs down".

When we go to the next light, he looked over at me in shock. I commented to his kid, "I think your dad is embarassed that his Porsche just got beat by a VOLVO".

From that point on, he wouldn't even come close to driving next to me.

I think what you folks might be missing is the overall package of the S, while still overpriced in my book, the driving experience is very appealing. The straight line is adequate, but the handling (especially with PASM and 18s NOT 19s) and the brakes are amazing. I fell in love with it after driving through some twisties; the connection between you, the car, and the road is awesome. If your main priority in a sports car is straight line go, then it is not the right car, that is for sure...but if you live someplace with curvy roads, the car has gotta be a blast. The expense was the killer for me; I lease and Porsche does not like leasing customers and the banks were not much better.

Exactly. Plus, the Boxster is a hot looking car...and the Cayman? Forgetabout it! If you're not a drag racer, then the Porsche Boxter/Cayman is a great car.

Well said. Boxster's aren't all that in a straight line. Porsche can't let that happen or the 911 would be pointless. I can slap non-S Boxster's no problem in a straight line.

I would like to try running with one through some twisties ... I bet I could keep up with one no problem.

Sit outside a Starbucks in Uptown Dallas early in the evening, it's a great car show with everything you mentioned just not as many Mustang GT's.
Or wait until they all cruise into Caddo Mills next weekend!
(Okay, no AM's scheduled but who cares, they're for show.)
