GT500 Mustang left for dead.
I get a call from my buddy yesteday that has a new GT500 Mustang convertible. He's curious about my AMG Benz. Mines an E55 and he an I have been trying to get together for a little race since he got it. He's not into MB and doesn't really know much about them but it was obvious from the phone call that he just got more "informed" about the breed.
Evidently, he picked on either an S or CL class biturbo V12 at a stop light and got left for dead. In his words, "the damn thing put three cars on me in 1st. gear and another three when I shifted to 2nd". He quit trying at that point.
Anyway, congratulations to the Jupiter resident that owns that beast. I've seen a couple around town and tried taking one on in my E55 which was humbling. For sure a V12 Biturbo is my next AMG.

I tell ya, Mustangs do sound good. But from my experience, they're a lot more bark than bite. Now, that's not to say they are all slow. There are some that are extremely fast.
He probably ran into a 65. SUPERFAST!!!!!!!!

C32 AMG - RIP :(
even if the mustang was faster, his dash squeaks and rattles and the tranny clunks.
I've had 5 mustangs in the past 8 yrs and I'll probably never get another.
1982 5.0 LX
2003 GT
2003 Cobra
1993 5.0 LX
1996 Cobra
They all squeak and rattle, and GT and both cobras had a tranny clunk that drove me crazy. They are fun at the drag strip and for doing burnouts though!

Not bad for a car 20 years old. Guaranteed in 20 years the Mercedes i had will have been made into a dishwasher by then, and that '87 will be a classic....

To their respect, Mustangs are fun cars to drive. I have driven two in the latest body style, a V8 convertible and a V6 coupe. The convertible was loud, but you really had to get on it to make it move at part throttle. Still, from a standstill, they took off pretty hard at WOT. The one downside was that it felt a bit loosely put together, certainly not worth the $41K sticker after all options and nonsense "limited edition" package. The V6 coupe on the other hand, even though it had less power, felt much more rigid, obviously from the fixed roof. For the right price, I could see myself purchasing a GT Coupe: solid drivetrain, fun experience behind the wheel, a myriad of affordable aftermarket parts, and that great sound coming from the 4.6 Liter. Once again another example of an enjoyable automobile marred by the stigma of its stereotypical driver.

I just got rid of an 87 GT with about 45k on the clock. Tight as a drum and damn reliable. I used to drive it to work when my lemon C230 was in the shop every 6 weeks or so.

Yes, that's right: the state-of-the-art engineering effort at Ford produced a chassis for their extreme performance machine, the Ford Fairmont, back in 1978...and then proceeded to slap new bodies on it for the next 24 years or so. Why waste money on little things like new chassis development when you can slap some new lipstick on an old pig?
Now why don't you run along, maybe go play with your light sabre or something....

Why would you keep a car that had to be in the shop every 6 weeks?

It was a lease!!! I HAD to keep it. LOL...believe me, as soon as it was up I dumped it. Have a Caddy now.....about 22k and not a glitch. Puts the C class i had to shame unfortunately.

I still have my 88GT which has 175k miles on it. New motor DSS 306 back when I put the SC on it it has about 480hp and is lots of fun to beat on. Done a bunch of other mods to it over the years, like cobra 13"/11.5" brake upgrade, bracing, panhard-rod, 3.55 gear, headers, no cats., dynomax mufflers(no baffles sounds great many ask if I have a big block) etc. Tough car, still has original AC compressor and power steering pump in it among other things. Like someone said above the newer GT500 is a porker, weighs what like 3900+lbs? Mine only weighs 3320 and I don't even have alum. heads(50lbs lighter) or after market front crossmember and control arms(drops like 70lbs). Runs high 11s in 1/4 and a lot cheaper to beat on and fix than my mercedes.
But it is what it is...unrefined, rough ride, goes around corners good though(since the mods). Clunky shifting...just the way the 3550 tremec is, the interior is you usual crappy american one and basically a world of difference(can get 3 turbo or SC systems for it vs. 1 SC for the SLK55 for the money) and purpose vs. my SLK55. If the wife ever got on me about having both and the CBR600rr and one had to go...it would be the Mustang no second thoughts(oh and I've had it since 1991 and 36k miles).
Curious what year was your C class?

Those Fox Bodies can handle some serious modifications to them. A guy I know built a pretty quick one. Granted, the ride could use some refinement, but those things modified can eat up the quarter with quite some fervor.

Cobra/E55
Though I do love Mercedes vehicles, I have to say that *most* will not compete with a modified, I mean properly modified, Cobra in a straight line. I don't mean the kid who puts loud exhaust on his Cobra and thinks it's fast.
On a side note, the new Cobras are porkers and weigh A LOT. On the other hand, with a couple bolt-ons, having a coupe not the vert, and some sticky tires you're looking at easy mid to low 11's. With about $7k in mods you're looking at low 10's.
I'm just saying they're definitely cars to watch out for... I know from first-hand experience.
