SL600 vs. 996 Carrera

Man do I love Porsche's. Waiting at a light to take a left turn and in front of me sits this low slung, debadged 996 convertible. We are both turning onto a narrow and moderately winding road that stretches for a few miles. The light turns green, and the Porsche turns, gunning his motor with that beautiful Flat-6 exhaust note coming out his tail pipes. Grinning, I put the hammer down, slightly kicking my tail out as my worn 225mm winter tires scramble for any whim of traction. The rear finally squats and this tank takes off, as I glue myself to within several feet of his bumper, playing a mild game of chase up to 80-90 miles per hour, the street otherwise deserted. Lined by woods on both sides, with two motors howling off of each bend, the guy can't shake me, as I anxiously await the oncoming straightaway where the single lane splits and we could have a straight out run. Ah, but unfortunately, we had to refrain ourselves due to a seemingly sudden appearance of traffic up ahead (no point to taunt stupidity). All in good fun, I would love to find one on a wide open highway sometime.

Cheers

Thank you. I gotta' say, at low engine speeds, those F6's sound a bit burbly...but approaching redline...wow...music.

I'm pretty sure I could have passed him had we gone at it on the straightaway...it wasn't difficult to stay on him. Still, you want to trade for a weekend?

Nice! Out of curiosity, arent 225s kind of small for a 600? Don't you get a lot of traction issues? Or are those just for the winter and you run bigger tires during other seasons?

They're just for the winter, I slap some 275's in back when the weather is more friendly. I'm not sure why MB made the standard width so narrow...my ESP light has a field day under hard acceleration, and if I dare turn traction control off, I'll leave some nice smokies for the fellow behind me.

HAHA both cars are awesome, but I think you would have pulled even earlier if you had wider tires.

The 996`s kick hard above 100 where the low drag and small frontal area make for a very quick car.

Good story and 225 must be scary in the bends.

Haha, thanks guys.

Porsche's are great cars, and I would love to pilot one someday. As for grip, well...let's just say I really miss my summer tires...

Especially if he meant mm not cm. Space saver size.

Looking for a Carrera myself but they don't seem to want to play. Where's Vadim...
