PISSED!A PONTIAC is faster than me!

i was enjoying my drive (SLK55) going uphill on a moutain. probably at 120km/h on a strainght and then i saw a old pontiac grand am type of car comming behind me pretty quick. i wasnt in the mood for racing but i slowly put my foot down (didnt change gears)... it was about 5 cars distance when i felt his power, i floored it but it was too late.by the time he passed me i was just a bit under 200km/h or so... dam, stupid kid gave me a dirty look and started making funny faces at me when we reached the light at the top of the hill
im so pissed off now..arg
did some reasearch and found out that this was wat i was up against
5.7L-16V V8 (LS1)
1998-2002 (ram air) 320-355 bhp 4.7-4.2 s. 165 mph / 265 km/h (electronically limited)
i guess he had some mods too so my stock slk55 didnt keep up

i think he drove a 2003 or so pontiac trans am special edition with the high power engine or sumthing.....

*sigh...... this just made my day...

How did you lose? If you only put your foot down slowly and surely? Was it even a fair race?

Sounds like a GTO from your description. 350 or 400 BHP depending on year plus mods.

You mention Ram Air (Trans AM) so I assume you mean this car...

I know your frustration but hey can't win all races though ... The last fleet had 325HP but the current 2003 GTO are at 400HP. And again possible the owner of that vehicle must have modded his car.

Anything can happen on the street, but....it sounds to me like you need to learn how to drive your car properly? Not to condone wreckless driving, but your car is considerably quicker than a stock LS1 equipped T/A (even modded it's going to take a lot just to run even w/you). In any case, it sounds like the guy had a running start, in which case, you were going to need mucho more power to stop his pull (it's no wonder you lost - if someone gets a huge jump on you - you ain't gonna catch him unless you have a huge power-to-weight advantage). Losing is no big deal. Just stay safe.

I use to own one , 2001 Trans Am WS6 (Ram Air) Package. I had alot of fun with this car and memories but unfortunately I had too many problems with it. It had alot of engine mechanical problems and it gave me so much headache that I returned it (lemon law) less than 10month and then that's where I got my first benz C280.

Back to topic these cars are quick 325HP/350TQ, they can run 0-60mph anywhere from 5.4-5.8secs. I'm sure the owner must have added Exhaust, headers, ECU, probably some internal upgrades like Cam/increase CID engines. These cars are easy to modify. Well I hope this helps and ease your anger and trust me I have run into vehicles too where they beat you and get you all puzzled. Dont let it get to you....

i'm surprised you lost in the mountains too. were there no twistys?

Most domestics car don't even have rear independent suspension. The mountains is where the mercedes should really shine, in comparison the the ws6.

It doesnt sound like much of a race anyways, but im sure you'll see him again eventually...don't feel too bad if he was modified in any way, it does not take much for those to get well over 400rwhp with just a few bolt-on's...

I used to own a '98 - it ran mid 12's at 115 with full exhaust/cam/gears on street tires. There are TONS of mods for these cars and they're very easy to make seriously fast. I still cruise with the local F-body (ie Firebird/Camaro) club and while I can take 'em stock, once modded all bets are off. Here's a short vid against a friend's bolt on 6-speed Camaro (LS1 drivetrain with full exhaust and a small cam). Even though he red lighted in this run I am still able to...barely...run him dowon in the quarter - on street tires he has a LOT more traction issues than me *L*. Once past a 1/4 distance though, he can pass me and keep on going into the distance and nothing I can do about it. He traps at close to 113, whereas my best there was just shy of 111.

Yup...and to the OP, don't sweat it, there's ALWAYS someone faster - just be careful out there and keep the shiney side up.

Nice run.

Both my best passes were against the LS1 modded Trans Am's

They were running low 12.30's @111-112

I agree, even though you lose always keep your head up and don't let the anger get to you. Someday for sure, it will happen to them eventually

Condone is a verb, meaning to forgive, allow, to pass, to overlook, to ignore, etc. If someone does not condone wreckless driving (ergo myself in my original post), this means they do not allow, forgive, allow, overlook, the practice of "wreckless driving".
