C5 Corvette vs C32 AMG

A friend and I were driving home tonight after grabbing some appetizers for happy hour. Saw a guy in a C5 'vette. He had some decently large tires on back and a V1 that I could see through the window. Not sure if he was modded, but the larger than stock tires (stock i think are 275s) had me thinking. It had the new style AZ license plate, so if it was modded, probably only had an intake (lid), but i could be wrong. I wasn't planning on doing a run, but as I passed the guy, he gave it some gas. So I matched it and we ended up doing two runs.

First run, from about 30 mph to about 80, the C5 had a slight jump and was about a fender ahead and I pulled even by 80 mph.

Then, next run, I start from the top of second. He downshifts. Again, he gets a little jump, I catch him and have a care by about 125 and then let off.

As usual, all runs were in Mexico. Calculated the DA: about 1562. The lower elevation definitely favored the V8 N/A vette.

ppl have talked about going up against z06s with the c32 all the time.

most agree the z06 can pretty easily take c32s but a c5 manual can just barely take down a c32 because its engine performs better on the top end, he prolly only had better wheels which helped get him a little more traction- but thats if the car is stock your c32 seems pretty beefy could you tell if it was a z06 or a c5?

Nice kill! I would guess that he had more than an intake. With your trap at 13.0x you should be taking c5's no problemo. Get that LET tune and you should be able to eat c5z06's and maybe c6's.

I miss Mexico myself, car is running like crap and I have a 185mm lying around :-(. Such a waste...

my car cannot take a Z06, whether a C5 or C6. C5 Z06s CONSISTENTLY trap 114 and some as high as 116-117 stock. I believe the fastest C32 traps 114-115. So I would need to upgrade to the 185 mm crank pulley and through a 50 shot or something with a tune and tires for a legit run with a Z06.

It was just a C5. You can tell if it is a Z06 by the rear brake ducts:

i believe a stock C32 vs stock C5 will be a good race only under certain conditions.

From a dig, unless manual, I think the the C5 will have the advantage. It has 275's stock and I have seen stock C5s run 12.5s at 106-108 because of that. From a roll however, it would a closer race from low down to below 100. After 100, the LS1 motor in the C5 would probably pull away from the C32. They have great topend.

yah that is what I was thinking....he was surprisingly willing to race me, which is rare for me. first vette I have ever raced in owning this car for 5+ years. I dont know if a tune will get me to c5Z06 range but it may get me to the earlier C6 range that have the LS2s and not the LS3s. C5Z06s and C6 with LS3s (newer C6s) trap consistently higher. But, that doesn't say I wont try to run one!

Yah, after my tune, I am considering trying out a 181 or 185....181 only because it doesnt run out on topend, like the 185 does.....sorry to hear your car isnt running well

I'm confused by the suggestion that the 181 pulley would be stronger up top than the 185.

well apparently the 185 runs lean or out of fuel up top. from what i have read, it runs out of power uptop because of this. i have not read that this was the case with the 181 anywhere. so i was wondering if a tuned 181 (which wouldnt cause any problems of running lean and out of power up top) would outrun a tuned 185 which does have power problems up top

I've heard about the 185 running lean up top, but I would think the power level should still be higher than the 181. I will be getting my 185 on the car soon and will try to get dyno comparisons between the two, as well as videos comparing top ends of both pulleys.
