My S65 and an R1 from a roll.....

I was on the way to a Porsche dealership this past Saturday to visit a friend of mine (and test drive a GT-R for fun) when a red/back R1 was following a bit close behind me in the 65. Once we got through some traffic he changed lanes to go around me and I punched it....and watched him in the rear view. He was definitely caught off guard and was surprised he had to actually go down a few gears to keep me from walking off on him. By the time he downshifted and got into his full-tuck “race-mode” I was already a 1-1.5 cars in front of him.....we came up on some light traffic and got out of it.

The second time he was ready.....full tuck, revs at about 8k and lookin at me waiting for me to move. Again, from 80mph....I nailed it, he nailed it....we went from 80 to about 125-130 and he was unable to move 1 inch on me. I heard him shift 3 times (had a pipe on it) and he kept looking over at me assuming he was going to eventually go around me.....think again. We slowed down again and he nodded the “yes” motion to me while giving me a thumbs up. That absolutely made my day. Reason #114 that I own a 65.....the element of surprise is a beautiful thing.

FWIW, that’s the second time I’ve raced an R1- the exact same results both times and from similar speeds (80-85mph). FYI, my 65 is a stock 220.

sure it was not an R6? New R1's are 180 hp and 85 ftlb at crank and weigh 450 pounds. should do mid 10's in quarter mile stock vs maybe mid 12's for an s65?

Read his sig, he has run a 11.5 @122, it takes a pro and alot of ***** to launch a bike into the 10 sec 1/4 mile times. This is very possible, bikes are not as fast as you think above 80mph, an r6 would not hang side by side at those speeds so Im sure it was a R1. Good race, im sure he was surprized.

Well said.....

I've ridden street bikes for 15yrs (hence my board name) and am fully aware of what an R1 is and what they're capable of......the 65 is absolutely brutal from an 80-85 punch. Yes, it was an R1...both times. Down low, it would be a different story. Great guy, good lookin bike, and a good/clean run......

To quote an article recently written by Car and Driver regarding the torque/power of the 65......

"Forget about 60 mph — that's over in a wheelspin-filled 4.2 seconds. Where the righteous S65 really shows its stuff is above 100 mph. Squash the accelerator, and before you can say Mississippi 22 times, 150 mph arrives, faster than a Ferrari F430. Braking is similarly astounding. In front, large 15.4-inch rotors defy reason and stop the 5081-pound S65 from 70 mph in 154 feet, a stop several feet shorter than Mercedes' outrageous 617-hp superstar, the $455,750 SLR, can muster. In keeping with the tradition of being unobtainable, the S65 is priced much like its predecessors. Those top-of-the-line Mercedes of the 1930s cost roughly 15 times the price of a mid-'30s Ford. The S65 that passed through our hands bore a price tag of $191,215 or, roughly, what 15 Ford Focuses cost. Suddenly, it's 1936 again."

Nice run!!!

The article you quoted from C&D is actually for a W221 S65. Your W220 S65 is about 200lbs lighter and should out perform a W221. You can only imagine how much more impressed they would have been if they tested a W220 S65.

Yep, I knew that....but didn't want to squak about the 200lbs . But, it does give some impressive comparisons that let people know where the 65 really shines

Wow, I didn't expect those results! Nice run I've pulled a few 600's but have always been hesitant to run 750's and liter bikes. Maybe I will give it a shot from a high roll

I had a similar run in with a GSX (R)? on the Interstate today with my E55. I nailed it at about 80-85 with him next to my door and he was just off my rear tire when he nailed it. He got out just in front of my hood pretty quickly but then shifted and only eased another 1/2-3/4 car length by about 130, when he let off and looked over to see where I was. I don't think he expected me to be so close and jumped back on it for a second before we had to let off for traffic.

Thats my type of race. It's annoying as hell when I'm riding my R6 and every ricer on the road tries to race, its never the cars that can actually hang with or beat a motorcycle.
