230k v Cummins turbo diesel

This happened over the summer but I figured it was still relevant.

A major recent problem around here has been rednecks in lifted turbo diesel pickups "rolling coal" or purposely tuning rich so they can blow clouds of black smoke on other people as they drive around. They are in effect the new ricer, except unlike the ricers, who are just annoying but harmless, these guys really ruin your day.

So I'm sitting at a red light on a major road and I notice that i am flanked by two Dodge Rams plastered in these "Diesel performance" stickers and Cummins badges everywhere. I also notice that the drivers keep eyeballing me and my freshly washed and waxed W202 and each other. It's obvious they want to smoke me out. so i put it in sport, turn of TCS and put lock it in first. As soon as the light changes I'm gone. They are behind me making huge clouds of smoke and trying to keep up. They were running so rich they didn't have a chance.

Afterwords I was talking to a buddy of mine who seriously races diesels in the 1/4mile and he told me that he saw a dyno of one of those guys and he was only making 140hp! i guess when you are dumping fuel out that back of an old engine with 300k+ miles on the clock that can happen.

I've nothing against diesel, it can be really fast and makes gobs of torque. The diesel merc drift car is all kinds of awesome. I just hate these guys trying to ruin everyone's day. I'm working on a fiat spider right now, and I have a feeling that it will be a target once on the road.

Those are starting to pop up in Southern Maryland too. We call them 'Bro Trucks'. Almost always have a pristine moto x bike in the bed. No mud anywhere on them, and spewing diesel smoke everywhere. I love it in the winter when they run off the road in packs, and I putz along in my winter beater just fine. (which is a 98 pontiac grand am) Tools.

Yeah i live in horse country so there are many with a legit need for a large pickup to pull the trailer. However there are a lot who think they need the utility when what they really need is a golf lol. A lot of purchases are made cause they have always bought brand a or b and many never consider anything else. But i think that is true of everywhere.

I know what you're talking about with those lifted turbo diesels. I used to have one lol. It was a 2008 Sierra 2500 with a custom tune. I was pushing 750HP and over 1050TQ. For their size you can really make them fast and surprise 99% of the people you race, if not win 99% of the time. I did regularly. Whoever remapped their ECU/TCU sucked apparently because they could have given you a little run for your money! Good kill either way!

Well as far as i can tell tje diesel crowd comes in two flavors. Those who go for big numbers and power like my froend and yourself. And those who do so to "smoke em out" and ruin everyones day

Haha, well mine blew a ton of black smoke. When they're tuned to their fullest capacity they always blow tons of smoke under WOT. I think this is because the ECU is jamming tons of fuel into the motor just before the turbo is completely spooled up. And any unburned fuel is turned into the annoying black smoke we all hate just after the boost kicks in, that's why they can achieve such tremendous HP and TQ, they can handle such incredible amount of combustion. They're fun to drive regardless but I realize how crappy it can be when a couple tuned turbo diesels get into the hands of some reckless necks. Haha. But his was probably done incorrectly, he should have at least surprised you a little bit.

Ive been told that a well done diesel will only make smoke right before boost kicks in, but they should keep dumping it. I dont know a lot about diesel tuning but in gas world a good tune is neither rich or lean. Its just right. Which can be hard to do, but you get best results then. As for these guys they werent. I mean a 230k isnt fast by any stretch but i beat em.

Sorry for any spelling issues ive been on my phone all day.

Those things are all over the place hear in South Fl. and some of them are damn fast. There's a Dodge 4 x 4 running around with Drag Radials on all four corners that consistantly runs in the 9's at 140 +. Extreme to say the least.

I've played with a couple that were tough to get around even in the E which is just amazing considering the size and weight of those things.

His mama. Traded y0 mama in because she was squeaking.
Horsepower doesn't mean much on a diesel. Torque is what you're after.

Your car may be able to go faster, but my 1100+ rear wheel ft lbs of torque can pull more weight. :p

I don't think I ever said anything to the contrary of that. You would be mad to try and pull a trailer with a c class. My dad has a Ford dually he uses to pull. I am quite aware of what they are capable of. The thread was more about these *****s running their engines rich to pour black smoke on people and that I was able to outrun them and ruin their attempt to troll.

Ah don't worry about it. Trucks are great when used for what they were designed for, but like all circles there are asshats that ruin it.

Same thing out here in the Wild West. LOOOOTTA cowboys with smokers but there are a few tricked out machines running around looking for kills.

Biggest tuner around here is Gillette and I took one on year or so ago plastered with logos etc. He sure wasn't used to getting killed so he went for it I think 3 different times at different lights. Turbs all spooling and like a mile high jacked up. Lost each time off the line but honestly not by much until we got over 60. Up in Mexico speeds, smoke was all pouring out of this thing like a steam locomotive. Looked great in my rear view. Result was still the same.

I know my day is coming with one of these things but for now I just enjoy the cowboy kills.

Fun times!!
