New Purchase

Hello,

I am considering purchasing an 2000 ML 430 or 2001 ML 430. What are the differences between the 2? Also, is there one you like over the other?

Also, could someone tell me if they are reliable or not. I am getting mixed reviews.

a car that can't do the throttle reset.
they have some history of issues. if they have some sort of warranty i would consider buying. no warranty, i wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Aside from the obvious addition of Tele-Aid in 2001, those are practically identical cars. You would probably encounter the following failures during ownership:
  • All Activity Module Fan (search for "e-box")
  • Fuel pump (approximately $1,000)
  • MAF (approximately $1,000)
  • Multiple O2 sensors (approximately $200 each)
  • Navigation antenna (approximately $500)
  • Navigation CD (approximately $150, but you might also be capable of recording a duplicate)
Also keep in mind that the ML has a brake pad service interval of approximately 10,000 to 25,000 miles, depending on your style of driving. The dealership usually charges $800 to $1,000 for pads and rotors. And, although the transmission is "sealed for life," several technicians have recommended changing the fluid between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. Several others have recommended that the fluid never be changed, although I am personally more inclined to agree with the former.

If you can tolerate those caveats, the ML430 is a reliable, well-engineered machine. As anybody here might recommend, purchase the most recent model year that your budget permits.

Happy driving!

Thank you all for your responses.

Will any of these items be covered in my extended warranty?

What is MAF?

Will your purchase be accompanied by Starmark coverage?

MAF is the Mass Air Flow sensor in the intake--it reads the amount and density of the air coming in to adjust engine parameters.

Starmark warranties are applied by Mercedes-Benz dealerships to certified pre-owned vehicles. They usually provide coverage until you have surpassed 100,000 miles. Most warranties, however, should cover everything listed but the navigation components and "wear items."
