Slick50 Engine Treatment - opinions please
Seeking opinions from MLGod and other experts on this forum PLEASE
Slick50 Engine treatment. Would I have any ill-effects on my '98 ML320
if I use this in my engine? (FYI, I typically do my own oil changes with regular oil every 3000 miles approximately).
Thanks, in advance, for your comments.

Slick50 and other oil treatments are at the very least a waste of money. By using the recomended oil and change intervals, you are already doing all you can to maintain your engine's internal friction surfaces. If you think you need to do more, switch to a semi or para synthetic oil. These are Group III dino oils with synthetic modifyers and additives.

DONT USE SLICK 50!
Slick50 has that magic "teflon" that they claim will protect your engine. Last I heard, teflon needed close to 1000 degrees heat to bond to anything.
Take it from E55, it's a waste of money, but I'd take it a step further and say it could cause harm to the engine with all of that teflon swirling around in there. Buy the best Synthetic oil you can (Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc..) and change it frequently (1/2 manufacturers interval E55AMG99 says) and you are 100% protected.
Additives that I know work are Techron for gas engines (for keeping engine clean). Redline 85+ (and similar products) for diesel engines, both for cleanup and lubricity and cetane boost. Water Wetter for keeping your engine from over heating, and that's pretty much it for me. Most of the other stuff is piggy backing on the success of the few that actually "work".

Yes, it takes very high temps to bond teflon to metal. There may even be some bonding going on inside your engine but in no way is it a cotrolled process and this leaving a very uneven surface. Teflon is a solid so why wold you want small solids running around in your oil? Lubricant work by keeping metals apart!
To be more clear about what CE750 said about oil change interval, I should explain further. My personal opinion about factory extended drain intervals for synthetic oil is that they are too long to be safe and I like to be safe. 3000 miles for dino oil is perfect! Switching to semi-synthetic would make 5000 acceptable. Only pure Group IV synthetics can run longer. I call it quits at 10,000. The reference to changing at 1/2 the interval is for the first oil fill from the factory. After that, at the 1/2 interval I change the filter only. In your case, you would not need to change the filter at the 1/2 way point as they are typicaly good for 5000 miles.
This process is overkill for some but I like my toys to spend their nights in MY garage and not the mechanic's!

Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and see the oil forums, especially the Used Oil Analysis (UOA) section. You can see results from lots of the European iron with long oil change intervals. Lots of opinions too!! I recently saw the UOA one for a Porche Cayenne that went a full 20,000 miles before changing the oil.
I think the current MB recommended 1 year or 13,000 mile interval is quite safe and conservative for most drivers as long as you use MB recommended oil and oil filter.

Oh yeah. Like CE750 said. Slick 50 is worse than snake oil. Snake oil at least won't hurt your engine. Do an internet search on Slick 50 and you will see what we mean.

While I don't dispute that 13000/1 yr is ok for normal driving with Mobil 1... being in Phoenix with it's extreme heat, and also being a more aggressive driver, I'm more comfortable with 1/2 intervals. I also changed my oil at 1000 miles (book break in).. though a CDI is not even close to broken in by then..

Hey CE750, there is nothing wrong and a lot right with doing more frequent oil changes than the MB recommendation. I am going to do an oil analysis on my next oil change which will be about 13,000 miles or 9 months. I will post it when I do so. If I went by the FSS, my oil change interval would be about 18,000 miles. I usually do an oil change somewhere in the middle of the interval that FSS indicates.

Thanks guys, for all your candid suggestions.
I guess i won't use Slick50. I will look in to Techron.
