2002 ML Oil Usage Question

Hello,

I was told that my ML would need to have a quart of oil added monthly by MB technicians. This doesn't seem right. Can someone tell me the normal oil usage for this suv? I've never heard anything about a quart of oil every 1,ooo miles.

Ouch.

My 2000 ML320 burns/uses no oil...although I just added less than 1/2 quart with just 500 miles to the next oil change.

Make sure you dont have a leak maybe at your oil filter which will only leak when driving. Are you using the recommended oil? Some oil eveporates more than others. My 2000ml burns maybe 1 qt. or less per oil change. 1 quart per 1000 miles seems plenty.

The 02 ML500 that I had never used one drop between changes at the FSS mileage. In fact no MB either V8 or 6Cyl ever required any oil added between changes and since 1998 thats 5 vehicles. Seems you have some sort of a problem either leak or burning oil.

hmm.. puzzling. It doesn't seem to be a new problem as I've searched the boards and this has happened to many other ML owners.

What's my next step? Call MBUSA and complain? My dealer walks the party line and insists it's normal!

Hi.
I just faced the same problem with my wifes "new" 98 ML320 with 75000 on the clock.
When she got the car, I had the engine oil changed with Castrol syntetic, and the maintenance reader reset. (read 9000).
A week ago the low oil level light came on and the reader show 5400 til required change.
Filled 2 liters of oil .
Can not see any oil leakages, no blue smoke, and the car is driven carefully in a mix of town & highway. The engine is also running very smooth and powerful.

Had a similare problem on my 89 300 SE.
When I used syntetic, I always had to add between changes. Are using normal oil now, and have no problems.
As I do not know what kind of oil have been used in the ML before, I am suspecting that the change to syntetic might be a reason for the consumption.

Anybody with the same opinion?

Per.

Dealer recommend Mobil 1 synthetic. stick with OEM or a good substitute like Amsoil.

BMW FTW
Anyone know the amount it must use before they cover it under warranty? I thought a while back they had some engine oil class action law suit but I cant recall if it covered the V6 or any ML's past 00. I want to say it was only for the 98 and 98 ML430... but I could be wrong..

About 2600 miles into a 3000-mile trip three years ago, the oil light in our 2000 ML320 went on. I found the nearest service station and had to add a couple of quarts of generic oil (all I could find). This is the first (and last) time that I have ever had to add oil.

When we returned home, I took the vehicle (still under warranty) to the dealership 'just to check things out'. I figured they would tell me that a couple of quarts on a 3000 mile trip was 'within limits'.

They asked to keep it for a few days. They called back after a couple of days and told me MB had authorized a new engine! This was at about 35,000 miles.

The vehicle now has almost 90,000 miles, and i've never added oil. Once a year or so (about 10,000 - 12,000) miles I take it in for the oil change, and that's it.
