What's Wrong with my Navigation???

Greetings,

I picked up a used 2005 ML500 SE about a month ago that has Naviagation but didn't include the DVD disc. I purchased what appears to be in good shape used 2002.1 DVD disc from a fellow board member and once loaded the map screen is very jumbled. I am able to access the set up screens, which i tried various combination and nothing seemed to correct the problem. Also, I'm not able to enter a destination.

When selecting MAP my nav looks like this:

I tried a couple of things to correct the problem but without sucess. I drove around for a while, left the car parked for a while with the nav on, I've even pulled the fuse for a few hours and when I replaced the fuse I had to reset the radio code. Nothing changed on the nav screen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The 2005 uses a DVD, not a CD. The 2002 ML discs are CD's not DVD's that could be part of your problem. Just purchase the correct up to date DVD for your vehicle, not a burned one and be certain its an ML DVD as they are model specific.

I am using a DVD-disc in a DVD-sytem

Sosh,

Thanks, but I did indicate in my post that I'm running a DVD-based disc in a DVD-system not a CD. Also, the disc I'm using appears to be an OEM disc not a burned copy.

Anyone else have a suggetion?

If its a 2002 disk from an ML its a CD not a DVD. If you are certain its a DVD then its not from an ML and will not work in an ML.

Its a DVD version 2002.2 definetly not a CD see Pics

From my research the 2003+ MLs moved to a DVD-based Nav system and use the same NAV-DVD discs. The original DVD disc released was the 2002.2 and there was an updated disc 2005.1 in 2005. As i understand it, the 2002.2 should work in 2003+ MLs. Therefore, i suspect there is something wrong with the satalite tracking or a set-up error, assuming the disc is OK. As the system seems to be working it just can't do a few things like show a map correctly; not able to enter a destination; and it seems to jump around as to my current location by about 25-30 miles.

See pics of disc I'm using:

Perhaps i'm missing something here and was hoping to save a trip to the dealer to resolve with some input from the board.

Is anyone else running a 2002.2 disc in thier late model ML?

Thanks in advance.

What you said makes sense, however I understand that while the discs can be updated to the next and future ones but you cannot go back to a previous one or one earlier than your MCS. Another possibility is that you have a bad player or, a bad antenna or perhaps the disc you purchased is bad. Can you see how many satelites you are receiving?? There is no set up or adjustment for the problem you describe. A dealer trip may be required.

Yes the sat display can be brought up on the bottom of the screen but with your problems you may not be able to get to it. Off hand I do not recall how to do it but its pretty intuitive. I leave mine with this on all the time. It will also show you lat/ long.

The screen looks like the resolution of the display doesn't match with the output device (DVD). The text is displayed fine because low resolution but the graphics are not. Try to calibrate the resolution if you can.

If your navigation system had been upgraded with a later version DVD, then using an earlier version will not work. The updated versions included software revisions which renders old version inoperable. There are always 2004.1 DVDs on Ebay for reasonable price. The other change as I recall was that the 2002.1 was a single layer DVD and the 2004.1 a double layer.

I will second that. If the system was ever updated to 2004.1 or later, then anything earlier will be inoperative. The 2004.1 disc upgrades the firmware so that previous versions no longer work. Even if not, the 2002.2 disc was so limited that it only had major highways and very little street details anywhere in the USA. I had one in Arkansas in mine and even the whole city of LIttle Rock only had the interstates and 2 state highways on it - most of the time it looks like youre driving out in nowhere because there were no city streets in it. 2004.1 was the first to add all the city streets nationwide. I would hope that the 2002 disc had some streets somewhere, but I drove all over the south with mine and it never had a single one. Just big highways. Hope this helps.

Before you spend a lot more on your nav, consider this: if it's like the one on the GL, it sucks anyway. Go buy a NUVI or good Tom-Tom, which will work better and is ready for use right out of the box. A lot of people on the GL board have done this even though their nav works okay, which is to say correctly, which is to say the way it's supposed to, which is not great. Compared to the Jap cars, it's really disappointing.
