Sorry for the rainy pics but better then nothing

Now to the more educational stuff: go drive a stock ML320, 350 500 and a ML55. Then drive the 350 with/without the 17inch ML500 wheel/tire set-up. Then drive the 55 (which is lower than stock MLs) again. Then do this exercise aggressively on a curvy road. The conclusion will be obvious!

For those who go 'street' - and sometimes it just makes me wonder why one would - the driveline and chassis of the car allows the performance envelope to be pushed to extremes. This is particularly owed to the fantastic double wishbone suspension front and back - i.e. you can't do this stuff to a Toyota Prado with its live axle setup.
To the other direction - and I believe this is where the ML's potential can really show - is improving its offroad ability. It has all the ingredients - 4ETS, a Krupp-style/box section frame, double wishbone suspension all-round, low range etc.
All you need is a modest 2" lift (F&R), the right tyres (i.e. A/Ts) and an ECU upgrade (well, I needed this for the CDI) and you have an offroad weapon that'll embarrass a Ranger Rover Sport. Did you know you can even disconnect the sway bars for more articulation for those tricky situations? I also have the OEM wheel carrier and fitted an aux tank where the space saver used to be - now got 190L all up for extended touring!

How does it ride? Does going lower necessarily have to mean riding harder? I have seen some variable coil springs that claim to lower rides heights on vehicles (improving the center of gravity), without making them ride harshly.
I am looking to upgrade the suspension on my 2000 - ML430 and keep it as a ski vehicle as opposed to selling it for next to nothing. Any other tips as to how to bring it to a more modern state?
What is the best source for ML performance parts?
BTW...can you repost your pics, they do not show up any longer?
The rough ride comes from the tough hard heavy wheel/sidewall combo, if you get a lighter rim, with comfortable tire it will be better. I have the 19 pound 19 inch Renntech Monolites on my car and it rides like a beauty for a lowered car, much better than the stock 18 inch wheels.
Because when you lower the front torsion bars you're actually softening up the tension rate vs increasing it, it tends to be more bouncy like waves when you go on certain roads that have wavy contour. You also come closer to hitting the bump stops when you lower the car so high bumps can get bumpier than stock setup.
Overall though it is worth the compromise if you're looking to improve the look and the handling feel.

Hey Ruey... Mbenzman gave me a cool idea that I did as well... if you clip half of the rubber stops that are installed on the bilstien shocks... you increase travel of the shock... it actually works better... Does your wheels rub?
I have the stock wheels on there and my tires tuck into the wheel well a lot... In fact, Im thinking of having the inside of my wheel well trimmed a bit to let the tire travel freely... on crappy roads its not a fun ride, but its def better on the highway, I do LOTS of highway driving, and am in love with its handling abilities now
My bumper is just straight up broken... it was an inside joke, lol

I remember you were interested in my bumper to replace this one. nice work done to the car! I can't ever get my car to look so nice in the rain.
