Front brake PADS for $352!!!

My ML320 has about 25,000 miles on it and after getting the two warning lights and buzzer had the dealer tell me it needs new front brake pads. Was amazed that this cost $352 installed.

For those of you who have been through this, is this typical? I'm referring to the cost not my mileage - I live in a very hilly area so expect shorter life from my brakes in general.

What other options do we have? Is this a relatively simple thing that can be done just as well at any brake shop and how much would they charge?

Would appreciate any feedback, shouldn't be too long before I need the rear pads replaced!

Front pads cost $69 and they are very easy to install yourself.

A shop would probably charge around an hour for the job so it would depend upon your local labor rates.

I got OEM front, rear pads + sensors for about $170 (shipping included) from performanceproducts.com. There is a trusty shop around my area will install all 4 pads for about $120. Hope this helps.

How long have you had your ML? I thought it was free under the 4 yr/50000 maintenance warranty?

Brake pads and other "wear items" are not part of the warranty.

MLs are very hard on brake pads for some reason.

I'll need to dig out my invoice, but I am pretty sure it was less than $350!

Wow that's pretty disappointing, my Audi included everything in its maintenance program, I just had to put gas and change tires.

So does MB pay for the service and you pay for the parts? Sorry if this is a stupid question but can you please clarify what's covered and what's not?

Thanks,

Did you receive a warranty booklet when you purchased your truck?

Unfortunately wear and tear items are not covered. This includes brake pads, tires, etc. I would think windshield wipers fell into this category too but they seem to replace those for free for me, perhaps because they felt they 'failed' prematurely, not sure.

Thanks for the replies. Next time I'll go elsewhere for the brakes. Of course, with both warning lights and the buzzer going on, I wasn't completely sure there wasn't some other problem and, if there was, it would have been covered under the warranty at MB.

Thanks for all the feedback.

WOW, did you ever getted ripped...

I had my fronts and rears replaced at separate times by the dealer. $205 for the fronts and $180 for the rears. I suggest you shop around next time and avoid Midas.

My wife actually took the car in and didn't question anything at the time. Looking at my bill I see they charged $176 for 'Brake Shoe' and $140 for the labor. I thought they only replaced the pads so don't really know what the brake shoe is all about. Are those 2 different things?

Awaiting a new arrival...
I was quoted $288 to do my front pads today...I'll pass and do it myself. I am shocked at pads being gone at 16k miles, though. For whatever reason, that is ridiculous. If it was something being tracked, I can understand, I've worn pads out on a weekend. But, on a 4000+ lb family hauler that sees 50% of its time cruising? This is ridiculous.

Here is the break down...........

of what I was charged for front pads.

Pads and sensors $120.00.
1 hour labor $85.00.
That was it $205.00 total.

About right for a dealer....

Best part of 100% mark up on the pads (probably cost them $50-60) and a minimum charge of 1 hours time - even though it probably only took them 30 minutes to do both wheels.
Heck I can do the front pads in well under an hour using all manual tools !

My stealership wanted $480 to do all four sets of pads - gets expensive every 18,000 miles. But I guess having an expensive 'prestige' vehicle I should willingly pay this and more for the priviledge ;-)

I had a quote around $250/w labor for my front ML430 at the Stealerships. I went through Ebay, and bought some pads for $60 shipped. I installed it my self, and it was the easiest brake job I've done. $250- $350 ya right!

You think you guys got ripped off, I had to replace pads at 11K miles!! WUWT! I don't even carry a load much less stomp on the brakes all the time.

Anyway, I complained to my dealer, Fletcher Jones N.B, that I didn't think the brake wear was normal. They offered to "Good Will" me 75% of the cost of the brake pad replacement(all four)

Imagine my surprise when I picked up the car an my balance was $176. When I asked about my good will, they said I got it and this was my 25%. That means FJ Mercedes wants $695 to replace pads and clean the rotors.

I told them fine, I was getting new pads for $176, but I also told them they should not expect any more brake work from me!
