2001 Mercedes ML320
First Time Mercedes Owner!

Hello everybody!
Today I bought myself a 2001 ML320, or should I say tomorrow when I pick it up! Ive been looking for an SUV for a while. 88k miles for $9500. I drove it for a good while on the interstate, backroads, and in town and it preformed flawlessly. No CEL's, no weird noises, or anything. Ive been reading review sites and people seemed pretty mixed about it, but it seems to be pretty common with every car 1 good review for every 2 bad. There were some "bad" reviews about placement of the cupholders and ride quality from soccer moms. Hello, its an SUV!

Heres the only thing I really noticed that might be a problem: The windshield washer for the front would not work. I couldnt hear the motor buzz from inside the truck, but I figured it was mercedes and they didnt want you to hear stuff like that. The dealer is checking it before I pick it up.

I attached a crappy picture on here but hope to take more later this week!

You have a $2-3K service coming up on you...just hope, you are aware of it..

Good luck with your new ride! The W163s are awesome SUVs...you sure will enjoy your time in it..

In about a year/10-12K miles, you will need the 100K mile service, which includes the sparkplugs, fuel filter, tranny flush etc. etc.

The service bill is in the $2-3K ball park range..I am just hoping, you were aware of it before making the purchase...

How is your new ride? I really enjoy our ML (2003 ML350 with 58,000Miles) and I am sure you will too. If you are handy with tools and your hands you can save yourself some money.
I do my own oil changes, brakes and I changed my own sparkplugs and wires last year. It was pretty easy. Just look up online all the info you can and try it out. Now I have to do the fuel filter but I am not sure about doing it myself.
You should flush the brake fluid every 2 years though.
Enjoy
Fred

I love this thing, its pretty awesome. Filled up for the first time, averaged 20mpg 90% city driving. Having a couple small problems though.

1)I was heading back from a bike ride in the mountains, I was on this really crappy road, and when I got on the main road, my BAS/ESP and ETS light were on. I stopped somewhere and when I restarted the vehicle the lights were out. Im assuming since I had to practically ride my brakes down this hill and brake suddenly for big potholes that my brake light switch needs lubed or replaced. It did it a couple more times and I just restarted it and they went out.

2)You lock the doors, and it leaves the hatch unlocked. If you try to open it like this, the alarm goes off. If you manually lock it from the inside, then unlock your doors, it unlocks it. When I press on the lock button I cannot hear the actuator activate. All this time its doing the lock-unlock-lock sequence and also doing it anytime you go under 10mph then over again. Ive been researching it on here and other sites and came up with this:

First I took the handle from the inside apart to see if the bar that connects to the white piece came off. It was still on. If you slide the lock on the inside back and forth, it feels very sluggish, and you can hear a motorized sound when doing it.

Is it the bottom lock actuator or the handle assembly on the top?

Congrats on the ML! Don't let the little things get to you! Its a great SUV. I try to treat mine like its a beater, that way I don't get upset when something goes wrong or I get a dent or scratch!

Thanks everyone!

Im gonna order the brake light switch and hatch lock actuator from autohausaz later on this week.

Also, are the gas gauges retarded in these things? Mine will fall to 3/4 to a tank after 60 miles, then to 1/2 after 100 miles, then to 1/4 of a tank after 270miles, then at 305 miles the light comes on, of course with 4 gallons still in the tank. So basically it "chills" at a half a tank forever.

Replaced the brake light switch today, but now it looks like I have a blown bulb in the back, yay! Also ordered the hatch handle assembly, $157 from KO performance, dealer wanted $227.50

just purchase ml320 2000

I purhased from a friend who said they took care of the car. but as I have driven it for a couple of weeks I noticed they lacked on the service mantainence. It ran sluggish and had some stalling issues.

So I took to my shop to fix brake booster (used) , brake pads, passenger rear window motor (would not go up), oil change, oil filter change 1400.00

I still needed to catch up on some a and b maintanence

1. I bought 4+ spark plugs (12) from autozone about 6.00 a piece(first i bought autolite untill I read bad reviews and swiched) and lube for tips

2. ordered hatched back door holders 90.00 autozone

3. air filter 29.00 autozone

I replace eveything my self thanks to this forum.

I still need to get fuel filter, and flush fluids, and figure out why my ac blows cold then hot air!

I have bas esp, and srs light too. Apparently alot of people have them on.
So i will probably start with changing the 02 sensor see how that works out.

BTY My car starts up with POWERand drives much smoother with the change of spark plugs WOW!

Good luck

No worries if you are even semi-handy with a wrench. I bought mine just last month with 103K miles and since then i have changed the plugs, changed the oil, changed the differential fluids, changed the tranny fluid, changed the air filter and i PROMISE you i havent come ANYWHERE near a thousand bucks for all that.

Im still trying to figure ot how to change transmission fluid. They say it does not need change but the previous owner did not take care of the car. I feel I needs all new fluids.

You will find many differing opinions on this:

As for me, i didnt change or flush ALL of the tranny fluid. I just drained what was there and roughly a 1/3 comes out and i refilled that amount (and replaced the gasket and filter as well). Do a search on here and there is tons of info on how to do it.
