ml 2.7 automatic 2003
ml 2.7 163 automatic stuck in first gear
I have a 2003 ml 2.7 diesel automatic which is stuck in first gear. Will start ok and drive but no gear change .Also once in drive cannot put into reverse without first turning engine off.Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be and any possible solutions?
The ESP ETS and BAS are also now on
Have replaced brake light as per other threads but this has achieved nothing.Any suggestions???

You are in "limp-home mode", which is usually 2nd gear. Hence the thunk you feel when you shift it out of neutral. There are many possible causes.
You need the codes read to determine the fault, then cleared in order to get out of limp mode. If you can't access a code reader, drive in 2nd gear to your nearest dealer or indie mechanic. Or hire a tow truck.

If the fault code indicates "selection lever detection has failed", then you'll need to start looking for causes. Corrosion of the connector at the gear shift lever module, maybe liquid in the module itself. Have you ever spilt coffee into it, or left the sunroof open when it rained?
Perhaps a previous owner did one of those. How long have you had it?
