98 ML320 Smoking center console

Have a 98 ML320, 296k miles, transmission replaced 5 years ago with 99 rebuilt , original motor. I know I need back end rotors and have not replaced, quoted $500 and up to replace, so now as I'm driving home I start to smell something. Pull into drive way and smoke coming from center console. Little triangle light with exclamation point has been flashing off and on intermittently for months and check engine light off and on for months as well. The brake light indicator have been off and on for months as well and I figured that was because I need new rotors. With the smoke now happening and smells electrical, do I now need to replace the YAW sensor along with the rotors? Don't yell at me for not replacing rotors sooner - not a lot of money but now I figure I've cost myself some more... Anyone have an answer?

You have two sensors under the center console, Yaw Rate and Lateral Accel.

Thank you so much Maj. Dundee, the attachment is going to help alot. Got the brakes, rotors, etc replaced, now on to determining which was smoking. One question though sir, with all the rotors, brakes, sensors replaced, do I have time on replacing the Yaw Rate or Lateral Accel without it messing with my brakes, etc? Husband will have to address this over the weekend.

If it turns out to be the Yaw Sensor that is smoking, replace it immediately because it can lock-up the brakes while traveling at high speeds.

You should have the codes read with the proper scanner that can read ABS codes. If code C1000 appears, you will need to replace the ESP Control Module along with the Yaw or Lateral Sensor.

I don't know how or how much of the console you removed, but here is how to get at them:

1. Remove the Arm Rest Cover.

2. Remove the Stowage Box.

3. Remove the Window Switch Pack by reaching under it and pushing it up and out & remove elec. connectors.

4. Then remove the Yaw Sensor and its bracket together by prying the locking tab out of its slot and turn it in the direction of the arrow.

Well thanks sir, we did all of that, removed everything. Still didn't find either one but that tells us that it definitely wasn't the YAW or accel sensor so I feel we're good. Car runs great, all lights are off. By the way, it looked to us that perhaps my fire from my cigarette happened to fall down the little cut out in the ashtray down to the safety cover over all of the components as we found a burnt spot on the safety material. Think that's where the smoke was coming from. Who knew? Kind of funny but not. In any case, my brakes and rotors are all replaced $700 later but I feel safe again. Thank you sir for your help.
