Transmission Dip Stick on a ML 500
I'm a first time owner of a MB. I've owned several BMW's and they all served me well and were easy to maintain. My question is this... I went to check the transmission level but it's sealed. I called the dealer and was told that it's sealed because it never needs servicing. My Z3 had a similar sealed trans but It was a 5-speed and grinding through the gears on occasion I knew that there must be filings in there and had it drained every 50,000 miles. Does the fluild need occasional replacement and how the heck do you check the fluid level and do a smell test?

Out Of Control!!
There are two very vibrant schools of thought on the subject. Sealed for life and otherwise---if you are an otherwise guy, read the thousands of posts on the subject and yes purchase a transmission fill check tool.

The dealer's info was correct, in c.2004, but the sealed-for-life policy was later revised to change ATF once only at 39,000 miles (at the 3rd 13,000-mile scheduled service or next servicing opportunity) which applied retroactively to all 722.6 transmissions. Some owners like to change their ATF more frequently, but they probably don't need to.

To check your transmission fluid level, you're going to have to buy a dipstick from eBay or Amazon, etc and it should be under $10 and you can service your transmission, it's fairly easy and there are many forums on how to do it.
