Ml320 2002 long crank
hi there my ML320 2002 sometimes takes a long time cranking before staring. Once it starts, if you shut it off and then back on it stars without any issue or without a long crank. No error codes or check engine light.
Changed the CPS a few days ago. No change. im thinking it’s the fuel filter or fuel pump. So I tested fuel pressure at the fuel rail valve. 55PSI while idling.
Once the car shuts off the pressure instantly drops. I thought the pressure was supposed to hold and bleed gradually. What does this mean? Is this a filter/pump issue or something else?

Start with the filter, which I believe on that car has the regulator included. If not, you need to replace whatever component has the check valve that should hold pressure.

Yeah it should retain some pressure for a couple hours, drop no more than 5-10 psi for 3 hours or something like that. There's a spec, but if it's dropping to zero, the check valve is bad, and that's causing the long crank while pressure builds up.

As ItalianJoe said start with replacing the filter. It's difficult as to location and procedure and requires a special tool to remove it.
