Next ML intro. January 2005
Sorry if this is old news--I haven't been hanging out here much lately. According to the current AutoSpies newsletter the next ML will be introduced at the Detroit show next January as a 2006 model. It doesn't say when it will actually be in showrooms, though.

W163 production will end some time before the unveiling of the next ML, and dealers won't be happy not having an SUV to sell for 6 months, so release to dealers is slated for early to mid spring next year - probably March-April some time.

As far as diesel engine options, I'm assuming they'll be carryovers or slight tweaks of the current CDI engines, just because I haven't heard of any new diesels yet - not sure though. There will, of course, be new gas engines - the direct injection 3.5L V6 from the new SLK and likely a new DI V8, between 4 and 5L in displacement. The AMG version will be either an ML55K, with the supercharged 5.5L V8, detuned a bit, or an ML63, with the new 6.3L AMG V8, also detuned. The reason for the detuning or "less optimized" design is that MB wants the AMG version of the R-Class sports tourer to be faster than the ML55K/ML63 to show its more road-going emphasis.
