Water pump bolt broke off in engine, how do I get it out? 2002 ML320

Ever have a day when everything goes wrong? I don't have them often but today was definitely one. One of the bolts broke off in the engine on the lower part of the water pump. How doe I get it out?

Thanks. Dennis

It all depends on what exact bolt broke (short or long) and how far into the eng. it broke off.

See example diagram below. Post a photo of the broken bolt.

Hey Maj Dundee, thanks for your reply, it is 4b screw, in your diagram it is right under the mercedes logo on the bottom, it is broke off to the edge of the engine. One of the last few so I just put it all together tilll I got a new bolt and new gasket I assume I will need.

Where did you get the bolt and gasket? Was it this number?

Did you remove the old pump to see if that bolt is broken off flush?

After you put everything back together, was there a leak?

Is it this bolt?

Yes that is the one. This just happened yesterday evening so I have not gotten a bolt and gasket yet. Yes everything is back together and don't leak at this time. I was tired, it was hot out and I stuck a screwdriver inside the hole and put it on the outside of the waterpump. It's close but not exact, I wanted to have everything I needed before I took the pump off again. Thanks.

Maj. Dundee, I have not gotten the bolt and gasket yet, I have not been able to locate the bolt. I have not removed the new pump to see if it is broken off flush, I wanted to 1. have the parts to finish the job and 2. know how to get it out if it is not flush.

Thanks

You must buy the bolt from the dealer, the part number that I already supplied you. You must have it on hand in case there is a stub left and you can remove it with a vise grip. Do not use any other bolt.

The other alternative is to drill into the center of the bolt and then use an EzOut.

But in my opinion if it isn't leaking now from that bolt, it won't leak when the new pump is installed. Simply fill up the hole with silicone before you install the new pump.

I definitely was not going to use any other bolt. Sorry if I wasn't clear, our youngest daughter has been sick and just got diagnosed with Lupus so I am scatterbrained right now. The bolt broke off during the install of the new pump which is on the suv and working well with NO LEAKS. Friday before last when I woke up there was a puddle in the driveway and have had to keep a oil bucket under it. Thanks for supplying your knowledge on how to handle this and what I needed, it is appreciated Maj. Dundee

Sorry to hear about your daughter.

Was it an oil leak or coolant leak?

Thank you Maj Dundee, it was a coolant leak. I am going to jeep an eye on it, get the screw, gasket and easy out, wait for cooler weather and fix it.
