Hard to get past N once in drive
Just bought the car a few days ago. Ive done a bunch of searches and found a number of close sykptoms with diagnosis.
trans shifts easily from park to reverse to neutral and drive. Shifts through all gears smoothly in drive. But, once im stopped amd ready to park, the shifter wont go past neutral. The only way to get it is to be rolling forward in drive and hit brakes hard and shove it in park. No check engine or transmission lights on. I do have the 3 ABS, ETC, BAS ESP lights. Think that was the broken wires from a frayed serpentine belt which i just fixed. Still have to figure out how to reset those...
When trying tobget past nuetral its a hard no like there is a gate blocking the shifter.
I have yet to change filter and fluid for trans but that is on the list. I bought it with this as a known condition thinking it was possibly a missalignment issue due to busted engine mounts, which I replaced yesterday. Still acting the same...
Ordered a new brake switch just for the hell of it.
Any suggestions welcome.

Duplicate the problem while the shifter is in D and with your foot on the brake, have someone check to see that the brake lights are on.
If you continue doing the slamming on the brakes and forcing it into park, you will need a new transmission.

Ill have to play with it some more and get a look at the shift linkage. I was more concerned with cleaning and sanitizing it, installing engine mounts and putting fresh oil in it. Now time to move on down the list of issues. Its a loooong one. Is it common for the linkage to get missaligned after a broken engine mount?
And as far as jaming it into park, it seems like the hard brake and rocking lets it just slide right into park. No clunking or banging. Im not trying to replace a transmission right now!

Brake lights worked. And I noticed if I stopped on a steep enough downhill slope like my driveway it would shift through the gears with no issues, park to drive and drive to park as many times as I tried it. Then on level ground or uphill it would get stuck. So the hitting of the brakes was enough momentum to toss whatever was getting stuck forward and out of the way. My guess it's the park lock mechanism that allows the selector to be removed from park with brake depressed. I'd press the brake and there was something actuating in there but sounded loose. Rather than screw with it right now, and after seeing the horrors of these shifters, I ordered a replacement for $80 and it work perfectly. Now I have a spare and I can take it apart to see what the actual issue was. At least the shifter is a pretty quick replacement. Also ended up doing a new fan clutch, headlights, and some pick-n-pull treasures to include passenger cup holder, visor, tail light, washer fluid reservoir and a seat motor. Left that place for $42. Not a bad start.

Parking brake holds as well...
The answer may be in the attachments but while I'm here, why are you suggesting parking brake shoes prior to me mentioning the noise?
Thanks!

Well thanks. Looks like I'll be looking at those right after the same on my GTO.
But as it's and internal shoe design, and completely stand alone from the hydrailic system, that's not going to cause my sqeel in reverse.
I intend to upgrade all 4 rotors to the Hart cross drilled/slotted brakes for $200 when these pads wear out. I've beaten these Hart rotors up on the road course in the GTO and can't find anything better for the price. Always the possibility of towing and we have a lot of steep hills here in Norther Cali.

Just to follow up with the cause for the issue... upon disassembly of the shifter I found that the shifter locking mechanism had fallen apart. And when trying to put it back together I lost the small spring in gravel hell. But there ya go. Remove the c clip and we have fully functioning shifter with no brake input necessary to drop it into gear. Not the safest but it works as a backup. So yeah, I could have fixed the issue for free but glad I have an extra now just in case...
