hey everyone!! so glad to join the forum been lurking for years. i have a 2000 mercedes ml320. i joined because im having problems with my truck. its been making a grinding noise in which my local mechanic told me it was my rear driveshaft and i need a new rear driveshaft although i think its just the rear driveshaft bearing but not sure. i would think if i need the whole driveshaft the car would not drive in which it does but thought i would ask some of you pro's on here. anyone can help would be appreciated . thank in advance.

Not sure who your mechanic is, but first rule of thumb is take what they say with caution, especially when they want to kill a teensie bug with a $$$ledge hammer. (Why not just have him sell you a replacement w163?)
I think you need to be more specific on your "grinding noise" and it's location - it could be many things.
Have you asked for a second opinion from a reputable indie in your area?

the noise is like a lathe grinding noise coming from the middle of the under carriage. from what i read its the rear driveshaft center bearing but the mech is telling me the whole driveshaft which i dont think the car would drive if it was the whole driveshaft but not sure
