Cool 1998 ML320 Shredded belt

To make life interesting, my ML320 had it's belt decide to shred on me, luckily only a block from my house. That was an interesting experience. Check battery indicator comes on and loss of power steering. Otherwise would have never known. Ordered a new Gates K060942 Belt to replace it.

So advice on replacing the belt. If I understand correctly, route the belt around the (passenger side pulleys) Generator, Coolant fan, and Guide Pulley 1 first. Then around the (driver side) power steering pump and crankshaft. Next loosen the tension-er with a 17mm ?? socket and route around the AC Compressor. Is it that simple or am I missing anything?

Still trying to figure out if there are any other issues. I checked pulleys 4 & 7 by spinning fast and # 4, "Guide Pulley 1 seems to spin freely". Can I get confirmation that this must be replaced?

If so, I believe you take off the plastic center cover w/ small screw driver. Then with a T50 torque, it can be removed. I believe this is GATES Idler Pulleys 38082. Is all of this correct?

Any next steps on what else to check?

Thank you!

Hi khomer2.
I had read that post and it did help a lot. I also watched a couple of videos but they were of different models. I was also looking for some confirmation on a few things like the pulley 4 free spinning means it needs to be replace before ordering and replacing the part.
Thank you.

For the Idler Pulley it is 19 ft. lbs.

I don't know what you mean by #14.

Hey Maj. Dundee.
On the technical diagram P13.22-0234-01 regarding the 6-groove single-belt drive with AC compressor, it list the Idle Pulley as the #4 Guide Pulley 1. So I was referencing that.

Thank you for the torque specs for the Idle Pulley. :-)

I needed it for #4, the Guide Pulley #1 / Idle Pulley. But I am good now. It is all back together. First time replacing a belt and it was a heck of a lot easier than I would have thought.

Thank you
