Instead of paying the stealer $20 for an oil filter I was looking for input if anybody orders their filters, etc. through the mail/internet/etc.?

Thanks,

I've been buying mine in bulk (~ 5 at the time) from Roy Tucker (800-259-1271) or 510-475-0444.
He gets the Mann (part # 000180 22 09) at a very good price, i think it was less than $10 but check with him cause it has been a while since i bought some. I used those on my '98 for 3 years without any problems with Mobil 10w40 synthetic.
He also has Japanese and Domestic parts as well.
Excellent price and outstanding Service that's for sure.

Any diff b/t Bosch and Hengst. It looks like those are the 2 filter kits they sell (about $1 diff in price). Who makes the OEM stuff anyway?

Aftermarket oil filters

See attached for three choices of current 320/430 cartridge filters. They range in price from $10.00 up to the O.E Mercedes filter at $18.50. I use these for my wifes 98 320 wagon and my 99 ML430.

Luckily, these filters are all accordian pleat so you can see all of the filter, unlike the filters that contain media of questionable quality. Of course, I prefer the MB filter but the WIX/NAPA comes in second and the STP is also a good choice. All seem to be well made.

There is some mention of a "fleece" type filter that is supposably the best, but I have yet to use one of these. Any info out there on this type ?

They claim the 229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils. See http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

Also the description below is for the newer and more expensive fleece filter. For people like myself who change their own oil a couple times a year it really doesn't make any difference.

"Fleece oil filter. Due to increased maintenance intervals, this filter comes equipped with an advanced filter media that allows the increase of service intervals with better filter efficiency, especially when using synthetic oils."

Fleece is the only thing available to us at the dealer now. If benz decided to use it for everything, I would too. I still change my oil every 3 K miles though, mostly cause it doesn't cost me anything!
