Rear main seal

HI, got 01 ML55 rear main seal starting to drip oil in between engine and tranny.
Anyone have step by step how to do the job? and where is the best to get the seal? I know it requires to remove the Transmission, and i am ok with that. Thank you!

These will get you started.

Transmission out
Drive plate off
Rear cover off

Then it seems like the procedure says the rear cover and the rear main seal are fitted as a single unit and both must be replaced. That sounds unusual. Hopefully someone with experience in this job can chime in.

In principle this look straightforward. As with all things MB there are tricky details that are critical. Torque specs, use of sealants and adhesives, careful cleaning and deburring, and single-use parts.

Make absolutely sure thats where its coming from. In my C55 (same motors as your ML55) I went to have the rear main seal swapped but it turns out it was the back of the valve covers leaking and dripping, making it look like the rear main. My own visual inspection wasnt enough, I had to do a clean and dye test to see the drip trail. Valve cover gaskets are the most common leak on the M113 engine.

If it is the rear main, make sure you get OE parts, not worth it to get something non OE from ebay and have to do it again.

Agree with this, to be 100% sure where the leak is coming from. You should be able to see the rear of the cam covers and cylinder head from below the vehicle. It requires a high powered flashlight and to be a gymnast. If you can’t get solid eye contact on the rear of the cam covers and cylinder heads, remove parts from the top of the engine and cowl/wiper area until you can. Inspection mirrors are helpful in this situation.

It’s cheaper and easier than replacing a rear seal that didn’t need to be replaced.

Did my valve cover gaskets last year, everything nice and clean. i have a drip or 2 in between engine and trany. not big leak but i am preparing to bite the bullet and do it. It is a 20 year old car with 66K miles on it and it would worth every penny to replace it. And yes, id only use MB parts is there a seal on transmission side? wile i have tranny out maybe i can do that to?

With the transmission out, the torque converter needs to come off. Then the seal is pried out. Item 10 in the diagram.
