What is the "P" setting for on the rotary headlight switch? The one on the turn signal lever. On my 04 ML350 it's the setting just below 'Off' or "O". It doesn't seem to do anything...The manual has NO information about this position.

city parking
Might have something to do with 'city parking'. In Europe it is customary to leave the parking lights on, just for one side of the vehicle...the side closest to traffic to avoid side scrape accident. Most Mercedes have had this option for a number of years. Usually just leaving the turn signal stalk down/up depending on side of street and light switch in this postion activates this feature.

With the key in the off position it will activate either the right or left front and rear parking lights depending on if the lever is in the up or down position.

The suggestion that you are Pete Fagerlin has to do with a common "combative" posting style. I doubt it was meant as a compliment.
On the other hand, Pete Fagerlin strikes me as a bright guy - so I guess you can infer your own meaning.
BTW, Sosh, we note that your response to the original poster was essentially repeating the first responder, only an hour later. You could have just as well said "ditto" yourself, except for the additional info re: the ignition being off. Your remark to ahopeter seems unwarranted.
Just my $0.02! Thanks!
