Did anyone own a ml320 and a discovery? which one do you prefer? I have a really good offer on a 2003 land rover discovery, 10k miles, loaded for $26k....any advice?

Thank you

Coincidently, I am also shopping for a 03/04 Discovery, although it's a new SUV but it sure feels like you are back in the mid 80's era, can't get away from the decade old design. Looks like you got a good price there, I found an 04' SE with 4K miles, dealer was asking for 34K, I offered 30K, he came came with 32.5K but I stuck to my price, it's been a week and the SUV is still there, these things are not exactly moving like hot potatoes, be firm with yr price and chances you will get it at yr price.

Are you trading in or just buying? did you think it was a bit underpowered? does it require lots of service and shop visits like the ml?

Thank you

I am keeping my ML, just need another SUV, :v

I didn't think the Discovery was underpowered but I do think the ML is a faster and a more responsive SUV. The two are very different beasts. I think the reliability of the Discovery is similar to the ML. If you are lucky and get got a good one, it will probably be pretty trouble free, after all the Discovery has been around for 15 yrs, one would like to believe most bugs are worked out of the system. Just don't feel bad to low ball the price, again these things are not flying off the lot like hot potatoes.

Hi guys, Just to add to your discussion, there is a new discovery very soon, so that should really help you get the price you want. Not sure when it comes to the US, but will definitely have a knock on effect.

ML vs. Discovery

Effective for '05, the Discovery line has been discontinued, replaced by the LR3. Some reading here ...

Apparently, the Discovery has such a bad reputation that Land Rover wanted to distance itself from it, to the point of dropping the name.

For that reason alone, I'd avoid the Discovery.

Yeah, in addition to the new name, their whole advertising campaign revolves around the LR3 supposedly not being "refreshed," but rather "all-new," etc. The idea is to distance it from the Discovery, which has had a pretty bad reputation for reliability. Interestingly, in most other parts of the world, the LR3 is still called the Discovery.

and they have had more recalls and after warranty issues then the ML. It's no wonder they are discontinuing it. They could not get repeat buyers let alone new buyers. BMW is the best thing that happened to the Range Rover but the Land Rover is another story. Great brand image but a pisser to own. Wait for their new products...

If you are worried about problems, best bet is to lease one for 3 yrs, drive the crap out of it but keep it clean and nice and hand the keys back after 36 mths.

I test drove an HSE 2004 model and although I was impressed, I had a few issues with it. The mileage was terrible at 10-12mpg. Also the rear door was VERY small and it made it difficult to climb in, even with running boards. The rear tire is placed just behing the rear door so that you're always gonna get some of that wheel dressing on your new linen pants. In fact, our sales person had numerous stains on her dress from showing the rear seats. I still liked the car, but they're blowing them out cause the new LR3 is so much better. In fact, I just got my preview brochure in the mail. It looks great, and has way more power. It's a little longer, so the htird row seat fits taller people and it shares a lot of the Range Rover's cool design lines. I'd wait, but with the current prices dropping so fast, you might get a screaming deal!

Good comments, very true. Oh, the salesman at British Motors pissed me off today. He called, I called to follow up on the Discovery I was interested in, he told me it was sold already since he did not want to take my offer which was 30K for a Discovery SE 04' model with 4.5k miles on it. 2 hours later I told my secretary to call them to ask about that Discovery with a different sales person, guess what? It's available and we have a great deal on it! WTF? I bet that thing is not going to get sold any time soon, like you said, 10-12 mpg on premium gas and that 2.50 a gallon here in SF.
